Elevate Your Christmas Tree: A Guide to Stylish Christmas Tree Baskets
Tired of the same old Christmas tree skirt? Looking for a way to add a touch of modern elegance to your holiday decor? Consider a Christmas tree basket! I’ve always preferred Christmas tree baskets over traditional skirts. They provide clean lines and a polished look that perfectly complements any style of tree. My home is filled with large storage baskets for everything from toys to blankets, and I was determined to repurpose one as a stylish tree stand without altering it permanently.
The challenge? My artificial Christmas tree base was too large to fit inside any of my existing baskets. But don’t worry, I’ve got a simple, DIY solution that requires no special skills! This guide will show you how to transform an ordinary wicker storage basket into a chic and functional Christmas tree basket stand.

What You’ll Need to Create Your Own Christmas Tree Basket Base
This project is incredibly straightforward, requiring only a few key items. The beauty of this approach is its simplicity – no cutting, gluing, or complicated steps are involved!
1. A Christmas Tree Stand Smaller Than Your Basket’s Inner Diameter
Don’t worry, you don’t need a brand new tree! You can easily replace your existing Christmas tree stand. Most retailers carry replacement stands specifically designed for artificial trees. If you prefer a real tree, make sure you choose a round stand.
The original base that came with my artificial tree measured a whopping 24 inches in diameter. Finding a basket large enough to accommodate that size would have been both difficult and expensive. My large baskets were all between 18 and 19 inches, so I needed to find a replacement tree stand with a diameter of 18 inches or less. For example, this option from Amazon would be a perfect fit.
2. A Basket With an Inside Diameter Slightly Larger Than Your Tree Stand
This is where you can get creative! Choose a basket that complements your existing decor and personal style. Whether you prefer natural materials, woven textures, or a pop of color, the possibilities are endless. Consider baskets with or without handles, or explore different shapes and sizes to find the perfect match for your tree.
Step-by-Step Guide: Placing Your Christmas Tree in a Basket
This is the easiest DIY project you’ll tackle this holiday season. No power tools or complex instructions here. Just a few simple steps to elevate your Christmas tree presentation:
- Measure Your Basket and Tree Stand: Before you begin, ensure your basket’s inner diameter is slightly larger than the diameter of your replacement tree stand. This will allow the stand to sit comfortably inside the basket.
- Place the Tree Stand Inside the Basket: Simply drop the new, smaller tree stand into the basket. That’s it!
- Assemble Your Christmas Tree: Follow the instructions provided with your artificial or real tree to assemble it securely on the stand.
- Admire Your Stylish Tree: Step back and admire your beautifully transformed Christmas tree! The basket conceals the unsightly stand and adds a touch of rustic charm to your holiday decor.

And the best part? When the holidays are over, the basket can go right back to its original purpose! Mine will be storing magazines once again, waiting to be repurposed next year.

Sometimes, you might even find that your existing tree stand already fits perfectly into a basket you own! I have a smaller tree in my son’s room, and its base fits perfectly inside his stuffed animal storage basket. This makes setup and takedown a breeze, as the basket seamlessly transitions back to toy storage after the holidays.

This method is simple, stylish, and incredibly easy to implement. My son even decorated this tree himself, and I didn’t move a single ornament! It was a challenge for me, but I love that it’s entirely his creation.
If you don’t already have a large basket on hand, here are a few of my favorite options in a variety of materials.
