DIY Minimalist Wood Spice Rack: Organize Your Kitchen in Style
Remember those ambitious DIY projects that started with the best intentions? My foray into the world of DIY kitchen organization began with decorating individual spice jars, hoping to bring some semblance of order to my chaotic and unlabelled spice collection.
Two years later, the spice jars have persevered, but my grand kitchen reorganization plans? Not so much. My pantry remained a wild west of unlabelled goods. The spice jars, along with various other condiments, were competing for precious countertop real estate – a kitchen nightmare!
It was time for action. I decided to construct a spice rack, a dedicated space to separate my spices from the rest of my cooking ingredients and achieve a semblance of kitchen order. This project is a beginner-friendly woodworking DIY, perfect for anyone seeking a simple and satisfying project.
Materials You’ll Need for Your DIY Spice Rack
Gather these materials before starting the project:
- Wood (Pine is a great choice for its affordability and workability)
- Ruler
- Pencil
- Hand saw (or a power saw for faster cutting)
- Sandpaper (various grits for smoothing the wood)
- Wood glue
- Painter’s tape
- Black paint (or any color you prefer)
- Paint brush
Step-by-Step Guide to Building Your Minimalist Spice Rack
Follow these simple steps to create your own stylish and functional spice rack:
Step 1: Measure and Cut the Wood Pieces
Using your ruler and pencil, carefully measure and mark the dimensions of each piece of the spice rack. Then, use your hand saw (or power saw) to cut each piece according to your markings. Accuracy is key to a clean and professional-looking finished product.
You’ll need a total of five pieces: one for the front, two for the shelves, one for the middle support, and one for the back. Refer to the image above for a visual guide to the pieces and their corresponding sizes.
While you can customize the measurements to suit your specific needs and spice jar sizes, feel free to use my measurements as a starting point:
- Piece A, Front of spice rack: 11 inches wide x 1.57 inches tall (280mm wide x 40mm tall)
- Piece B, Middle of spice rack: 11 inches wide x 1.57 inches tall (280mm wide x 40mm tall)
- Piece C, Lower shelf of spice rack: 11 inches wide x 2.56 inches tall (280mm wide x 65mm tall)
- Piece D, Upper shelf of spice rack: 11 inches wide x 2.56 inches tall (280mm wide x 65mm tall)
- Piece E, Back of spice rack: 11 inches wide x 3.5 inches tall (280mm wide x 90mm tall)
Important Note: These measurements are based on the 8mm/0.31-inch thick timber I used. If your timber has a different thickness, adjust the measurements accordingly to ensure a stable and well-proportioned spice rack.
Step 2: Sand the Edges
Once you’ve cut all the pieces, take the sandpaper and gently smooth the edges of each piece. This will remove any splinters, sharp edges, and imperfections, creating a smooth surface for gluing and painting. Start with a coarser grit sandpaper and then move to a finer grit for a smoother finish.
Step 3: Assemble the Base – Gluing Piece A to Piece C
Apply a generous amount of wood glue to the edge of Piece A (the front of the spice rack) and carefully attach it to Piece C (the lower shelf of the spice rack). Ensure that the two pieces are aligned at a perfect right angle (90 degrees). Use clamps or weights to hold the pieces together while the glue dries. This step forms the foundation of your spice rack.
Step 4: Attach Piece B (Middle Support)
After the glue holding Pieces A and C together has completely dried (refer to the glue manufacturer’s instructions for drying time), apply wood glue to the top edge of Piece A and the front edge of Piece C. Then, carefully attach them to Piece B (the middle of the spice rack), ensuring everything is aligned correctly. Again, use clamps to hold the pieces firmly together until the glue is completely dry.
Step 5: Attach Piece D (Upper Shelf)
Repeat the gluing process to attach Piece D (the upper shelf of the spice rack) to the middle support (Piece B). Your spice rack should now resemble a set of stairs in progress. Ensure all pieces are aligned correctly and use clamps to hold them together while the glue dries.
Step 6: Attach Piece E (Back of the Spice Rack)
Finally, apply wood glue to the back edges of Pieces B, C, and D. Attach Piece E (the back of the spice rack) to these edges, creating a solid and enclosed structure. This piece will add significant stability to your spice rack. Use clamps to hold all the pieces together firmly while the glue cures.
Step 7: Prepare for Painting – Applying Painter’s Tape
Once the glue has completely dried and the structure is stable, apply painter’s tape carefully along all the side edges of your spice rack. The tape will create a crisp, clean line when you paint the edges, adding a professional touch to your finished product.
Step 8: Paint the Edges
Make sure the tape is firmly adhered to the wood. Using a paintbrush, carefully apply black paint (or your color of choice) to the exposed edges of the spice rack. Apply thin, even coats of paint, allowing each coat to dry completely before applying the next.
Step 9: Reveal Your Finished Spice Rack!
Once the paint has fully dried, carefully remove the painter’s tape to reveal the finished spice rack! The contrast between the natural wood and the painted edges will create a stylish and modern look.
Now, I know there’s a plethora of spice rack DIYs out there, some far more intricate and ornate than this one. But if you, like me, appreciate a minimalist aesthetic, then this project is perfect for you! Plus, minimalist designs are often much easier to execute.
