Last year marked a significant milestone for Al and me: we became homeowners! We embraced the challenge of transforming our new house, tackling projects one at a time. The appeal of a house needing a little TLC was a major selling point for us. After completing a few smaller updates, we decided it was time to truly personalize the space, starting with our one and only bathroom. This bathroom renovation is more than just a remodel; it’s about creating a functional and stylish space that reflects our personalities.
The idea of renovating the sole bathroom in our one-bath house while living in it seemed a bit daunting initially. We figured, “We’re young and relatively adaptable, so why not?” However, after enduring four long days without a functioning toilet, I began to question my self-proclaimed low-maintenance lifestyle. Once we overcame that significant hurdle, it was mostly smooth sailing at The 387 Cottage. After all, who truly needs a shower every day anyway? This bathroom remodel was definitely a test of our patience and resilience.

Our plan was straightforward: completely gut the existing bathroom and create a brand-new space. At first glance, the bathroom didn’t seem entirely terrible, but the closer you examined the walls, floor, and fixtures, the more issues became apparent. Every corner revealed another flaw, solidifying our decision to pursue a full renovation. This gut renovation was the only way to achieve the fresh and modern bathroom we envisioned.
Looking at these photos, you might think I’ve never cleaned a day in my life! The reality is, no amount of scrubbing could remedy the years of accumulated grime and dated features. As an OCD neat freak, that realization was particularly disheartening. And yes, that is indeed duct tape securing the bathroom fan. Who needs screws when you have duct tape, right? Beyond the general grime, our two biggest pet peeves were the arched ceiling and the infamous snake shower head. These bathroom design flaws were something that we really wanted to address.
The snake shower head still haunts my dreams! It simply had to go, along with everything else in the bathroom. Before demolition could begin, we needed a solid plan. We turned to the internet for inspiration, browsing Pinterest, Lowe’s.com, and other favorite websites to gather ideas and begin shaping our vision for the new bathroom.
