Step 1: Assemble the Lantern

Begin by assembling your paper lantern according to the instructions
provided on the packaging. This will form the base of your bauble piñata.

Step 2: Seal the Bottom

To prevent any candy from escaping, close up the hole at the bottom of the
lantern using a cardboard circle. Secure it in place with sticky tape.

Don’t worry about making this part look perfect, as it will be hidden by
the fringing later on. The primary goal is to ensure a secure seal to
contain all the treats.

Step 3: Cut the Cello Strips

Start cutting your metallic tissue paper or cello sheet into strips. Aim for
strips that are approximately 2 inches wide.

Step 4: Create the Fringe

Once you’ve cut all your strips, it’s time to create the fringe. Using
scissors, snip partway into each strip at regular intervals. Be careful
not to cut all the way through.

Pro Tip: Investing in a pair of fringing scissors will significantly
speed up this process and ensure consistent fringe length.

Step 5: Apply the Fringe

Now, begin covering your paper lantern with the fringed cello strips. Apply
a length of double-sided tape to the back of your fringe, on the uncut
portion.

Starting from the bottom, wind your way up to the top, sticking the fringed
strips around the lantern in a spiral pattern.

When one strip of fringe runs out, simply attach the next one and continue
working your way around the lantern. Make sure to overlap each layer of
fringe to ensure that no part of the lantern is visible underneath. This
will create a full and festive look.

Step 6: Fill with Candy

Once you’ve reached the top and your lantern is completely covered in
fringed strips, it’s time for the best part: filling the lantern with
candy or small toys!

Step 7: Seal the Top

After filling your lantern, cut two semi-circle pieces of white cardstock
to cover the hole at the top. Secure them in place with sticky tape,
ensuring that the metal hook remains exposed. This hook is crucial for
hanging your piñata.

To conceal the cardboard and maintain a cohesive look, add more fringe to
cover the top of the bauble. This will blend the top seamlessly with the
rest of the piñata.

Step 8: Attach Hanging String

Tie a piece of string or twine securely to the metal hook at the top of
your paper lantern. This will be used to hang your finished piñata.
Double-check the knot to ensure it’s strong enough to support the weight of
the piñata.

Step 9: Create the Top Circle

Draw a small circle on white cardstock by tracing around a circular object,
such as a cup. Then, carefully cut out the circle with a pair of scissors.
This circle will form the top of the bauble’s decorative element.

Step 10: Cut the Cardboard Strip

Cut a length of cardstock that’s approximately 3 inches wide and long
enough to bend all the way around your cardboard circle. This strip will
form the sides of the decorative element.

Step 11: Divide the Strip

Use a ruler to divide the length of cardstock into three sections. Create
two “tabs” that measure 0.5 inches each and a larger section in the middle,
which should measure roughly 2 inches wide.

Step 12: Fold and Snip the Tabs

Fold the length of cardstock along the tabs so that they point in opposite
directions.

Then, use a pair of scissors to make small snips in the tabs at intervals
of around 0.5 inches. These snips will allow you to easily attach the strip
to the circle.

Step 13: Form the Cylinder

Bend your length of cardboard around the circle you cut in Step 9. Use the
tabs and some tape to attach the circle to your cardboard strip.

You should now have an open-ended cardboard cylinder.

Step 14: Attach to the Bauble

Poke a hole in the middle of your cardboard cylinder and thread the string
you tied in Step 8 through the hole so that the cylinder sits on top of
your fringed paper lantern.

Step 15: Secure the Cylinder

Fix the cardboard cylinder firmly in place by taping it down along the
tabs. This will ensure that the decorative element is securely attached to
the bauble.

Step 16: Add Finishing Touches

Cover the cardboard cylinder with silver metallic fringing.
