Create Your Own Serene Sounds: A DIY Wind Chime Project

Have you ever been disappointed by the quality of a store-bought wind chime? I certainly have. Last summer, I invested in a wind chime from a reputable local garden center, only to find it falling apart after just one month. The wood was splitting, and the finish was peeling. That experience inspired me to design and build my own wind chime – one that would not only sound beautiful but also withstand the elements.

The journey to creating the perfect wind chime involved careful consideration of materials, design, and sound. I wanted a chime that was durable, aesthetically pleasing, and produced a deep, resonant tone. Here’s how it all began, and how you can replicate my success.

Choosing the Right Materials for a Lasting Wind Chime

Durability was paramount. My initial thought was redwood, known for its resistance to decay. However, redwood can be difficult to find in the Midwest. Ultimately, I chose Ipe, a South American hardwood renowned for its exceptional strength and resistance to weathering, insects, and even fire. While Ipe is more expensive than some other woods (though still less costly than teak), its longevity and beauty make it a worthwhile investment. A 6′ x 6″ piece cost me around $40, but it’s virtually indestructible and perfect for outdoor use. If your wind chime will be protected from the elements under a porch or covered area, pine may be a suitable and more affordable option.

Designing for Aesthetics and Sound

Beyond durability, I had several specific design goals in mind:

  • No Visible Knots: Many DIY wind chimes feature exposed knots, which I wanted to avoid. I aimed for a clean, professional look similar to high-end store-bought chimes.
  • Deep Resonance: I already had wind chimes with higher tones, so I wanted this one to produce a deep, rich, and calming sound.
  • Zen-like Quality: The overall design should evoke a sense of peace and tranquility.

With these goals in mind, I set out to create a wind chime that would be both beautiful and functional. And I succeeded! Now, I’m sharing the tutorial with you.

Materials You’ll Need to Build Your Wind Chime

Here’s a comprehensive list of the materials and tools you’ll need for this project:

  • 5 feet of 1/2” copper pipe
  • 4 – 1/2” copper pipe caps
  • 2-part epoxy for copper
  • 3′ x 6″ Ipe or redwood (Our board width measured 5-5/16” wide. Yours may or not be the same.)
  • Black nylon (We used 36lb test Musky Master found at a local sporting goods store.)
  • Drill
  • 1/16” & 3/16″ drill bits
  • Saw, table or otherwise
  • Pipe cutter
  • 8 – 1 1/4” finish nails and hammer
  • Very fine sand paper
  • Tape measure
  • Pencil

A Note on Counterboring: To counterbore, we simply used the 3/16″ drill bit to drill a relief cavity (about a quarter inch deep) for the knots.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Building Your Wind Chime

Follow these detailed instructions to create your own beautiful and resonant wind chime:

Step 1: Cut the Wood Pieces

Begin by cutting the Ipe (or redwood) into the following sizes:

  • 1 piece at 5 5/16” x 5 5/16”
  • 1 piece at 4 5/16” x 4 5/16”
  • 1 piece at 3 5/16” x 3 5/16”
  • (These three pieces will be assembled to create our cap.)

Note: If your wood does not measure 5 5/16″ wide, just cut the largest piece square and subtract 1” for each of the next two parts.

  • 1 piece at 3 1/2” x 1 3/4” (This will be our wind sail.)
  • 1 piece at 3 1/2” x 3 1/2”. Cut each corner on this piece to fashion and octagon. (This will be our striker.)

Accurate cuts are essential for a well-balanced and visually appealing wind chime.

Step 2: Chamfer the Edges

Use a table saw, router, or sander to chamfer the top edges of the three squares at a 45-degree angle. (If cutting, always cut the end-grain ends first. The other two cuts will address tear out.) Then, chamfer ALL edges of the striker and wind sail. Chamfering adds a refined touch and helps prevent splintering.

Step 3: Cut and Prepare the Copper Pipes

Cut the copper pipe into four lengths: 18”, 16”, 14”, and 12”. Use a pipe cutter for clean, precise cuts. De-burr the pipe ends with sandpaper to remove any sharp edges. Very fine sandpaper can also be used to remove any ink markings on the pipes, leaving them with a gleaming finish.

Step 4: Prepare the Copper End Caps

Drill a 1/16” hole into the center of each of the four copper end caps. Cut four lengths of nylon, approximately 12” each. Thread one length of nylon through the hole in each end cap, and tie a knot on the end that will be inside the cap. Mix the 2-part epoxy and glue one end cap onto one end of each copper pipe. Ensure the caps are securely attached, as these will hold the pipes in place.

Step 5: Prepare the Top Square

Mark the center of the smallest square you cut in step one and drill a 1/16” hole at that point. Counterbore the underside (the non-chamfered side) of the square to create a cavity to hide a knot. Cut about a foot of nylon and thread both ends through the hole you just drilled. Knot the ends and tuck the knot into the counterbored hole. This will be the point from which the entire chime hangs.

Step 6: Assemble the Cap (Part 1)

From the underside, nail the second largest square to the smallest square. Refer to the picture below for proper placement. Ensure the pieces are aligned and securely fastened.

Step 7: Prepare the Bottom Square

Now take the largest square and mark the center. Drill a 1/16” hole here as well as at each corner. Use the assembled squares from the last step to determine where the corner holes should be drilled. (The idea is that the square directly above will cover the holes drilled in this step.) These corner holes will be used to suspend the copper pipes.

Step 8: Counterbore the Bottom Square

Counterbore each of these five holes (one in the center and four in the corners) on the chamfered side. This will provide space to conceal the knots when attaching the copper pipes and striker assembly.

Step 9: Prepare the Wind Sail

Drill a 1/16″ hole at the top (about 1/2” down) of the wind sail. This hole will be used to attach the wind sail to the striker assembly.

Step 10: Prepare the Striker

Mark the center and drill a hole into the center of the striker. Counterbore one side. The counterbored side will face downwards.

Step 11: Assemble the Striker and Wind Sail

Cut about 5 feet of nylon. Fold it in half and thread it through the hole in the wind sail. Use a half-hitch to secure it. Make a large knot about 15 1/2” up from the wind sail. Thread on the striker – with the counterbored hole facing down.

Step 12: Attach the Copper Pipes to the Cap

Thread the nylon protruding from the copper pipes and end caps through the four holes in the corners of the largest block of wood. Thread the two longest pipes into opposite corners; this will help keep your cap level. The picture below shows the UNDERSIDE of the block; the counterbored holes will be facing UP when assembled.

Knot each nylon strand and hide the knots in the counterbored holes. Aim for the pipes to hang approximately 2″ down from the cap.

Step 13: Attach the Striker/Wind Sail Assembly

Thread the nylon coming from the striker/wind sail assembly through the center hole in the bottom square (counterbored side is facing down in the picture below).

…and knot well. (The striker should be approximately 7 1/2″ from the cap.) The picture below shows the counterbored/knot side of the block pictured above.

Step 14: Final Assembly and Hanging

Finally, nail the top two blocks to the bottom block from the underside. Now, hang your wind chime and wait for a gust of wind to enjoy the soothing sounds!
