Playroom Makeover: Designing a Dream Space for a Growing Family

We did it! We successfully transformed our 1,200 square foot home into a haven where our family of four can live, work, and truly thrive. You might not see it in the photos, but our newborn son has made this room his temporary home, complete with a bassinet and a soothing sound machine. It’s an adjustment, of course, but we’re embracing it and making it work. What has truly eased my mind is the incredible transformation of our once-forgotten sunroom. By turning it into a cozy and welcoming playroom, we’ve created a seamless transition for our newborn into our family life. It has also helped our toddler accept the fact that he’s no longer an only child. And we owe it all to the magic of paint from Sherwin-Williams!

Maximizing Space in a Small Playroom

The key to our playroom makeover was maximizing every inch of space. Since the room is relatively small, strategic planning was essential. One entire wall is comprised of windows, which is wonderful for natural light but limited our wall space to just three. To make the most of the vertical space, we lined the longest wall with shelving units. These shelves provide ample storage for everything from books and toys to diapers and other baby essentials, keeping the playroom organized and clutter-free.

Choosing the Perfect Paint Colors

The foundation of our playroom’s design is the perfect neutral gray paint palette for the walls and floor. We owe a huge thank you to the knowledgeable employees at our local Sherwin-Williams store for helping us select the ideal shades. We even utilized the Sherwin-Williams ColorSnap® app to visualize how the colors would look in our specific space before committing. This was incredibly helpful! To add a playful touch, we incorporated vibrant lime green accents. These pops of color brighten up the white shelving and add a sense of fun and energy to the room. We even had the Sherwin-Williams team perfectly match the lime green paint to the color of our existing playroom chairs, creating a cohesive and harmonious look. The addition of shelving has significantly increased our storage capacity, making it easier to keep the playroom tidy and organized.

Creating an Art Station for Creative Expression

We dedicated one of the remaining walls to creating a dedicated art station for our son. We designed and built a custom desk and installed shelves above it to hold all his art supplies. The desk has quickly become one of his favorite features of the room. To make it even more special, we coated the desk surface with Sketch Pad™ dry erase coating from Sherwin-Williams. This allows him to draw directly on the surface with dry-erase markers, turning the desk into a giant canvas! Of course, we had to clearly communicate that the desk was the *only* surface he was allowed to draw on directly, but he’s been wonderful about respecting the boundaries.

A Space for Everyone

The best part about this playroom makeover is that it has created a space where everyone in the family feels like they have their own dedicated area. The room is filled with personality, reflecting the unique interests and needs of each family member. We’re so excited to watch our boys grow from brothers into best friends in this playful environment over the years to come. This playroom is more than just a room; it’s a place where memories will be made and bonds will be strengthened.
