What You’ll Need: Materials and Tools

Step-by-Step Guide to Building Your IKEA Knuff Birdhouse

Now that we have all our materials, let’s begin building our stylish birdhouse. Follow these easy steps to create a cozy home for your backyard birds.

Step 1: Creating the Entrance Hole

Using the 1 1/2 inch drill bit, carefully drill a hole in the front of the Knuff magazine file. Position the hole somewhat centered on the bottom half of the file. This will be the main entrance for the birds.

Step 2: Sanding and Smoothing the Edges

Once the hole is drilled, use sandpaper to smooth the edges, both inside and outside. This will prevent the birds from catching their feathers and ensure a safe entrance.

Next, drill a 1/4 inch hole about 1 1/2 inches below the large entrance hole. This smaller hole will hold the perch.

Step 3: Painting and Decorating

This is where you can get creative! Use washi tape or painter’s tape to section off areas around the entrance hole. In the example, a triangular section is taped off. Paint the section with your desired color(s) using acrylic paint. Let the paint dry completely before carefully removing the tape.

Step 4: Adding Hanging Holes

Cut two pieces of thin gauge wire, each approximately 2 feet long (or long enough to wrap around the tree or post where you’ll be hanging the birdhouse). Thread one piece of wire through the top two holes, going in one and back out the other. Repeat with the second piece of wire through the bottom two holes.

Step 6: Installing the Perch

Apply a small dab of hot glue to one end of the 3-inch dowel rod. Insert the glued end into the 1/4 inch hole you drilled earlier to create the perch.

Step 7: Adding the Aluminum Flashing Roof

The Knuff magazine file has small holes on the front and back (which are now the sides of the birdhouse). To prevent drafts, you’ll want to cover these holes.

Cut two 2×2 inch squares of aluminum flashing using tin snips. Apply a small line of hot glue to each side of one square and attach it to the inside of the file, covering one of the small round holes. Be careful as the flashing can heat up quickly. Repeat for the other small hole.

Next, cut a piece of flashing that is approximately 14×5 inches to create the roof. Apply hot glue to the top edges of the Knuff file and carefully attach the aluminum flashing roof. Again, be cautious of the heat from the flashing.

Congratulations! Your DIY IKEA Knuff birdhouse is now complete. All that’s left is to hang it on a tree or post using the wire and a screw. Soon, you’ll have birds nesting in their new, stylish home!
