Before diving into the crafting process, let’s talk about color schemes. Selecting the right colors is crucial for
achieving a harmonious and visually appealing final product. Initially, I chose five distinct colors for this
project. However, after experimenting with various combinations, I realized that one of the colors didn’t quite
complement the rest. As a result, I decided to eliminate it from the palette.

The key takeaway here is to be adaptable and unafraid to make adjustments. Don’t hesitate to discard a color if it
doesn’t resonate with the overall aesthetic you’re aiming for. As a general guideline, I recommend sticking to a
maximum of five colors. In my case, the natural wood served as a fifth color, as I intentionally left portions of
the circles unpainted to showcase the wood’s inherent beauty.

Materials You’ll Need:

  1. Wood Circles:

    I sourced my wood circles from CraftParts.com,
    utilizing the following sizes: 4 inches, 6.5 inches, 8 inches, and 10 inches. Alternatively, you can find
    similar wood circles at most craft stores.
  2. Acrylic Craft Paint:
    Choose
    your favorite colors (up to five), paint brushes, and blue painter’s tape.
  3. 1/2″ Thick Dowel Rods
  4. Rotary Tool or Small Saw: For cutting the dowels.
  5. Wood Glue
  6. Sheet of 1/8″ – 1/4″ Hardboard or Plywood
  7. Hammer and Nails
  8. Sawtooth Picture Hanger

Creating Your Dimensional Wall Art: A Step-by-Step Tutorial

Follow these detailed instructions to create your own stunning piece of dimensional circle wall art:

  1. Prepare the Wood Circles: Begin by applying painter’s tape to the surface of one of the wood circles to
    create various shapes and patterns. Ensure the tape is firmly pressed down, particularly along the edges, to
    achieve clean and crisp lines when painting.
  2. Apply the Paint: Carefully paint inside the taped-off areas, ensuring even coverage. Allow the paint to dry
    completely before proceeding.
  3. Remove the Tape and Experiment: Once the paint is dry, gently remove the painter’s tape to reveal your
    design. Feel free to experiment with different color combinations and patterns. You can keep it simple with a
    single color, use two or three colors, or go all out with your entire palette. The possibilities are endless!
  4. Repeat the Process: Repeat steps 1-3 for all of your wood circles, varying the sizes, patterns, and color
    combinations to create a visually dynamic and engaging composition.
  5. Cut the Dowels: Now it’s time to cut the dowels. Using a rotary tool or saw, cut the dowels into various
    lengths. For this project, I used four different sizes: short, medium-short, medium, and tall.

    The length of the dowels will determine how far each circle will protrude from the main wood frame. Note:
    I also attached several circles directly to the wood panel base without any dowels, creating a fifth height
    dimension.
  6. Dry Fit and Plan Your Layout: Once the dowels have been cut, arrange the painted circles on the hardboard
    or plywood base to roughly plan the positioning of each circle. This dry fit will help you visualize the final
    composition and ensure a balanced and aesthetically pleasing arrangement. While the layout may change slightly
    during the assembly process, having a general plan in place will make the process smoother.
  7. Glue the Dowels: With your design in place, it’s time to glue the dowels to the back of each circle. Flip
    over all of your circles and apply a generous amount of wood glue to the center of each circle. Attach a dowel to
    the glued area and allow the glue to dry according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Clamping the dowels in
    place for 30 minutes to an hour can help ensure a strong bond. Avoid stressing the joints for a full 24 hours to
    allow the glue to fully cure. You can also use painter’s tape to hold the dowels in place while the glue dries.
    Note:

    I chose the dowel heights at random, ensuring that no two adjacent circles were at the same height, creating a
    more visually interesting and dynamic piece.
  8. Attach the Sawtooth Hanger: Next, attach a sawtooth picture hanger to the upper center of the hardboard or
    wood base. Flip the base over.
  9. Glue the Dowels to the Base: After allowing the dowels ample time to dry and securely attach to the circles,
    you’re ready to attach the dowels to the wood base with more wood glue.

    For added security, you can hammer nails through the underside of the wood base and into the dowels. This helps
    keep the dowels in place while the glue is drying and provides extra reinforcement, but it’s not strictly
    necessary.
  10. Final Drying Time: Allow the entire piece to dry for a full 24 hours before hanging.

And voila! Here’s the finished piece:
