Host the Perfect Wine and Cheese Party: A Comprehensive Guide

Elegant Wine and Cheese Party Setup

Wine and cheese: a timeless pairing, a culinary romance. They complement each other beautifully, creating a symphony of flavors that delights the senses. Like any successful pairing, understanding the nuances of both wine and cheese is essential to creating a memorable experience.

Our Journey into the World of Wine and Cheese

My husband, Bruno, and I have always cherished the simple pleasure of enjoying wine and cheese together. One of our first dates involved a picnic, complete with crackers, cheddar cheese, and a bottle of inexpensive red wine. It was uncomplicated, yet perfect. Years later, while our children have commandeered most of the crackers, our love for wine and cheese remains a constant. We make it a point to indulge in a cheese and wine dinner at least once a month, a cherished ritual after putting the kids to bed.

We’ve often considered hosting a wine and cheese party but felt it would be too complicated or expensive. However, a visit to Bruno’s cousin in France introduced us to a relaxed and delightful way to combine these two culinary treasures. The French dinner featured simple cheeses, charcuterie, fresh baguettes, and plenty of table wine, served unpretentiously. The quality of the ingredients and the thoughtful combinations transformed a simple meal into an unforgettable experience.

Inspired by that French dinner, we recently hosted our own wine and cheese party for a small group of friends. We’re excited to share our tips and insights, hoping to inspire you to create your own memorable gathering.

Planning Your Wine and Cheese Party

Planning is key to a successful wine and cheese party. We started a few weeks in advance, focusing on creating a menu that was both delicious and approachable. Our French dinner served as our guiding light, so we knew we wanted a selection of cheeses, an assortment of bread and crackers, ample wine, and various accompaniments, such as meats, fruits, and olives.

I delved into food blogs and entertainment websites for inspiration, gathering ideas on my Pinterest board: Wine & Cheese Pairing Party. However, I was determined to keep things simple and avoid unnecessary complications. I also consulted cookbooks, like Rachel Khoo’s Little Paris Kitchen, for inspiration.

The most helpful step in our planning process was visiting a local wine and cheese shop, Surdyk’s. This store has an impressive selection of cheeses and wines and knowledgeable staff who can offer guidance and advice.

Before visiting the store, I had read that white wines tend to pair better with cheese due to their lower tannin levels compared to red wines. The consultants at Surdyk’s confirmed this. In the end, I purchased a selection of both red and white wines (ten bottles in total, which proved to be a bit excessive for our party of eight). While all the wines paired well with the cheese, the white and rosé wines were particularly complex and delightful.

I started in the wine shop, selecting a range of affordable wines, and then took my wine list to the deli where a cheese expert helped me choose five cheeses that would complement the wines.

Creating the Ambiance: Decor and Presentation

Once we finalized the menu, we shifted our focus to presentation, aiming for a simple yet elegant display. We used a combination of marble and wooden serving platters to showcase the cheese, crackers, and bread. The key to a successful wine and cheese party is creating a relaxed and inviting atmosphere where guests feel comfortable trying different pairings and engaging in conversation.

Serving Ware

We created our own marble serving platters using marble tiles and furniture pads. It’s a simple DIY project. Here’s a helpful tutorial. These DIY marble trays added a touch of elegance to our display and were a cost-effective alternative to purchasing expensive serving platters.

I also ordered these bamboo appetizer plates with a clever wine glass holder. These plates were a hit and are incredibly versatile. Their compact size makes them perfect for mingling while enjoying your wine and cheese.

One of the most effective strategies was dividing the food among several serving platters, using small bowls and ramekins. This creates a visually appealing display, prevents overcrowding around popular items, and adds a special touch to the presentation. Think of it as creating miniature vignettes of deliciousness scattered around the table.

Adding Personal Touches

We incorporated white dinner candles for a warm glow and created simple labels using stock vector images of cows, sheep, and goats. Some labels were made with Sculpey clay, while others were crafted from cardstock, adding a personal and whimsical touch.

We created simple polka-dot cocktail napkins using fabric paint, the round end of a wine cork, and plain white napkins. You can find the paint here. This added a personal touch to our party.

Menu Board

To guide our guests through the wine and cheese pairings, we created a menu board. We used foam core, chalkboard paint, and chalkboard markers. Check out this tutorial. The menu board made it easy for everyone to create their own pairings.

We provided notecards for our guests to record their favorite wine and cheese combinations for future reference. This helped them remember what they liked most.
