Before and After: An old chair transformed into a white and gold glam chair.

This weekend, my friend Steph and I embarked on a fun DIY adventure: giving an old chair a brand new look. Our mission? To transform a basic swivel chair into a modern glam masterpiece, inspired by a beautiful piece we spotted at Anthropologie. The best part? We completed this project in just about four hours and for under $5! If you’re looking for a budget-friendly way to upgrade your home decor, this is the perfect project for you.

The inspiration for this project came from a chair I saw in the Anthropologie catalog. While I loved the design, the price tag was far beyond my budget. So, I decided to recreate the look myself. When my sweetheart’s parents gifted me an old swivel chair, I knew exactly what to do with it. With the help of my amazing friend Steph, we gathered our supplies and got to work. Even if you need to purchase all the materials, this project shouldn’t cost you more than $20. And the best part? You can easily complete it in a single day!

Materials and Tools You’ll Need

Before you start, gather all the necessary materials and tools. This will make the process smoother and more efficient. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Old Chair with Removable Seat: Look for a chair with a sturdy frame and a seat that can be easily detached. Swivel chairs work great, but any chair with a removable seat will do.
  • Sandpaper: Essential for preparing the chair frame for painting. Choose a medium-grit sandpaper for best results.
  • Gold Spray Paint (2 cans): The key to achieving that glamorous gold finish! Make sure to choose a high-quality spray paint for a durable and even coat.
  • Spray Sealer (Polyurethane): Protects the paint and adds a professional finish. Polyurethane is a great choice for its durability and resistance to scratches.
  • White Latex or Acrylic Paint: Provides a clean and classic contrast to the gold. Choose a paint that is suitable for the material of your seat cushion.
  • Paintbrush: For applying the white paint to the seat cushion. A good quality brush will help you achieve a smooth and even finish.
  • Masking Tape: Essential for creating clean lines and geometric patterns. Choose a high-quality masking tape that won’t leave residue on your chair.

Step-by-Step Guide to Creating Your Glam Chair

Now that you have all your materials and tools ready, it’s time to start the makeover! Follow these step-by-step instructions to transform your old chair into a stunning glam piece.

Step 1: Prepare the Seat Cushion

First, detach the seat cushion from the chair frame. In most cases, this involves unscrewing a few screws from the bottom of the seat. The difficulty of this step may vary depending on the type of chair you’re working with. If the seat has been reupholstered previously, remove the old fabric to reveal the original cushion. This will give you a clean slate to work with.

Next, apply a coat of spray sealer to the cushion. This will prevent the paint from being absorbed too quickly and ensure a more even finish. If your cushion is made of a highly absorbent material like cotton, you may need to recover it with a sturdier fabric like canvas before painting. While the sealer dries, move on to step 2.

Step 2: Sand and Spray Paint the Chair Frame

Prepare the chair frame for painting by sanding it down with sandpaper. This will create a rough surface that the paint can adhere to more easily. Pay special attention to any glossy or slick areas. Once you’ve finished sanding, wipe down the frame to remove any dust or debris.

After sanding, it’s time to spray paint the chair frame gold! Apply several thin coats of spray paint, allowing each coat to dry completely before applying the next. This will help prevent drips and ensure an even finish. Be sure to cover all surfaces, including any nooks and crannies. Depending on the design of your chair, you may need to turn it upside down to reach all areas.

While the chair frame is drying, you can also spray paint the seat cushion gold. Apply several thin coats of spray paint, allowing each coat to dry completely before applying the next. Once both the frame and cushion are dry, move on to step 3.

Step 3: Paint the Seat with a Geometric Design

Once the gold paint on the seat cushion is completely dry, it’s time to add the white geometric design. Use masking tape to create zig-zaggy lines or any other pattern you like. Press the tape firmly to the cushion to prevent paint from seeping underneath.

Apply a thin coat of white paint to the exposed areas of the cushion. Use a paintbrush to ensure an even and smooth finish.

Immediately after painting, carefully remove the masking tape. It’s important to remove the tape while the paint is still wet to prevent it from drying to the tape and pulling off the gold paint. Once the white paint is dry, apply a matte finish spray paint and sealer to protect the paint and prevent cracking.

Step 4: Reassemble and Enjoy!

Once all the paint is dry, it’s time to reassemble your glam chair! Simply screw the seat cushion back onto the chair frame. Step back and admire your newly transformed piece of furniture.
