The idea of creating a DIY play kitchen for my children has been on my mind ever since I stumbled upon the countless inspiring projects on Pinterest. Our journey began a few months ago during a garage clean-out. My husband and I were preparing a donation drop-off for the Salvation Army when we came across an old student desk. Josh began by cutting off the bottom trim of the desk, giving it a clean, straight line. Next, Josh lowered the drawer on the left side of the desk to create space for the oven. He removed the drawer on the right side altogether and installed a top shelf, along with the shortened kitchen cabinet, to form the microwave. Incredibly, he even discovered a small metal rack in the garage that fit perfectly inside the oven space, serving as a baking rack!

To complete the transformation, I purchased paint, replacement oven knobs, hardware, wainscoting, the most affordable faucet I could find, and a metal bowl to serve as the sink. All in all, the entire kitchen project likely cost us around $40. I used leftover vinyl to create the “windows” for the microwave and oven, as well as the microwave’s numerical display. Frugality was key in completing this project!
