DIY Stool Transformation: From Thrift Store Find to Stylish Home Accent
Have you ever stumbled upon a seemingly ordinary item and envisioned its potential for something extraordinary? That’s exactly what happened when I was searching for a small stool to help my aging cat comfortably reach our bed. As many pet owners understand, ensuring our furry companions’ comfort is a top priority. My initial search for a suitable stool proved fruitless – the available options were either the wrong size or simply didn’t appeal to my aesthetic. Before resorting to a custom-built solution, I decided to explore the local thrift store, hoping for a stroke of luck.
And luck struck indeed! There, amidst the pre-loved furniture, I spotted a bar-height stool, marked down to a mere $4. Inspiration sparked instantly: I could cut it down to the perfect height and give it a stylish makeover with upholstery. This project transformed into not just one, but two unique stools, each with its own distinct character.

The Transformation Begins: Cutting the Stool
The first step in this DIY adventure was to reduce the stool’s height. We aimed for approximately 17 inches, a comfortable height for our feline friend. To ensure a clean and precise cut, we used a table saw. We carefully propped the stool up and securely clamped it to the fence. This ensured stability and prevented any unwanted movement during the cutting process, leading to a smooth and even separation.

Two Stools from One: An Unexpected Surprise
Once the cutting was complete, an unexpected realization dawned upon me: the single stool had essentially transformed into two potential stools! This revelation added an exciting twist to the project. The top portion, intended for our cat, was well on its way. The remaining portion, however, presented an opportunity to create a completely different stool with its own unique design and purpose.

Crafting the Second Stool: A New Seat
The “surprise” stool lacked a seat, which was easily remedied by using a piece of scrap Medium-Density Fiberboard (MDF) we had in our workshop. We carefully measured and cut the MDF to the appropriate size, ensuring a square and symmetrical shape. The MDF was then securely attached to the top of the stool frame using screws, creating a sturdy and reliable seat.

Painting and Priming: A Fresh New Look
To give the second stool a fresh and modern appearance, we decided to paint the legs a bright, clean white. Before applying the paint, we lightly sanded the legs to create a smooth surface for better adhesion. A coat of primer was applied to ensure even coverage and enhance the paint’s durability. Finally, we applied several coats of semi-gloss white paint, allowing each coat to dry thoroughly before applying the next. The result was a sleek and contemporary finish that perfectly complemented the stool’s design.

Adding Comfort: Foam and Batting
For added comfort, we decided to upholster the seat of the second stool. From our leftover materials, we found a piece of high-density foam and batting. We applied a light layer of spray adhesive to the MDF seat to keep the foam and batting securely in place. This created a soft and cushioned surface, making the stool more comfortable to sit on.

Upholstering the Base: Utility Cotton
To provide a base layer for the slipcover, we upholstered the seat in a simple utility cotton fabric. This added another layer of protection to the foam and batting, while also providing a neutral surface for the slipcover to rest upon. The utility cotton was securely stapled to the underside of the MDF seat, creating a clean and professional finish.

Creating the Slipcover: A Custom Fit
The final touch for the second stool was a custom-made slipcover. Instead of using a pattern, I opted to fit the fabric pieces directly onto the stool itself. This allowed for a perfectly tailored fit, ensuring a snug and seamless appearance. Each fabric piece was carefully pinned into place, ensuring that it followed the contours of the stool’s seat. Before sewing, the pinned pieces were basted together. This temporary stitching held the fabric in place, making the final sewing process much easier and preventing any unwanted puckering or shifting. Basting slipcovers is an essential step for me; otherwise, the whole process typically ends in frustration.

A Playful Design: Mixing Prints
For the slipcover, I decided to incorporate two different fabric prints. I thought mixing patterns might create a visually interesting and unique design. I chose a classic houndstooth pattern for the main body of the slipcover and a delicate floral print for the accent pieces. The combination of these two contrasting patterns added a touch of whimsy and personality to the stool.

Sewing It All Together: The Finishing Touch
Once the fabric pieces were basted together, I carefully sewed them together using a sewing machine. I paid close attention to the seams, ensuring that they were straight and secure. After sewing, I removed the basting stitches and pressed the seams for a clean and professional finish.

The Finished Product: A Stylish Accent Piece
And here’s the finished “surprise” stool! The combination of the bright white legs, the comfortable cushioned seat, and the playful mixed prints creates a stylish and eye-catching accent piece. This stool is not only functional but also adds a touch of personality to any room.

The Original Inspiration: A Stool for Our Furry Friend
Now, let’s turn our attention back to the original inspiration for this project: the stool for our cat. This stool was much simpler to create. After lightly sanding the legs to remove any rough spots, I applied a couple of coats of Danish oil. This enhanced the natural beauty of the wood and provided a protective finish.

Addressing the Finish: A Matter of Preference
While the legs of the stool were in relatively good condition, I wasn’t a fan of the shiny original finish that was still visible on the seat. It just didn’t align with the aesthetic I was aiming for. To remedy this, I decided to soften the finish and create a more comfortable surface.

Adding Comfort: Faux Fur Upholstery
To create a soft and inviting surface for our cat, I added a layer of batting to the seat, followed by a piece of fuzzy faux fur. The faux fur was carefully stapled to the underside of the seat, creating a plush and comfortable surface for our feline companion to rest upon.

The Finished Product: A Cozy Cat Stool
And here it is, the completed cat stool! From start to finish, this project took approximately 30 minutes, excluding drying time. The result is a simple yet functional stool that provides our cat with a comfortable and accessible way to reach the bed.

Reflections on the Project: Unexpected Delights
There are many aspects of this project that I truly enjoyed. One of the most exciting was the unexpected creation of the second stool. The fact that two completely different stools emerged from a single thrift store find is a testament to the power of creativity and resourcefulness.

This DIY stool transformation project was a rewarding experience that yielded two unique and functional pieces. From a simple thrift store find, we created a stylish accent stool and a cozy cat stool, both of which add character and comfort to our home. This project proves that with a little creativity and effort, you can transform ordinary items into something truly special.
