While driftwood and river rocks can create a serene aesthetic, finding them isn’t always feasible. If you’re like me and your surroundings offer primarily fallen oak leaves, dried corn stalks, and twigs scattered by the wind, don’t despair! These readily available materials can be transformed into something special and modern.

That’s where the idea for these adorable, rustic wooden place card holders came from. They’re not just for Thanksgiving; they’re perfect for any gathering where you want to add a personal and handcrafted touch. The best part? They are practically free to make, incredibly easy to assemble, and will only gain character and durability as the wood naturally dries and seasons.

This project is budget-friendly, eco-conscious, and a fun way to unleash your creativity. Here’s what you’ll need to get started:

Tools and Materials:

  • Found Tree Branch: Look for a relatively dry branch, ideally 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter. The drier the branch, the better the results will be.
  • Handsaw: Any type of handsaw will work, such as a pull saw, hacksaw, coping saw, or even a miter box. Choose the one you’re most comfortable using.
  • Wire or Nylon Brush: This will help you clean the branch and remove any loose debris.
  • Vice, Clamp, or Locking Pliers: You’ll need a secure way to hold the branch steady while you cut it.
  • Computer and Printer (Optional): If you want to use the free printable place cards.

Cleaning and Preparing the Tree Branch for DIY Place Card Holders

Instructions:

Step 1: Branch Selection and Preparation

Carefully examine your found branch and identify the straightest sections. While small knots and bumps add character and a rustic feel to the finished product, avoid sections with sharp angles, as these can compromise the stability and balance of your place card holders.

Once you’ve selected the appropriate sections, use your wire or nylon brush to thoroughly clean the branch. Remove any lichen, moss, loose bark, or other organic matter that may be clinging to the surface. Wipe the branch clean with a damp cloth to remove any remaining dirt or debris. This step ensures a clean and natural look for your finished place card holders.

Now it’s time to cut the branch into individual rounds. Using your handsaw, cut several rounds that are approximately 5/8 to 3/4 inches thick. As you cut the rounds, try to maintain a consistent angle to ensure that the top and bottom surfaces are relatively parallel. This will help your place card holders stand evenly. Remember to prioritize safety and use a secure grip when using the saw.

Step 3: Creating the Card Slot (Kerf)

For medium-weight cover stock, which is approximately 1/64 of an inch thick, a thin-bladed saw is perfect. Most small handsaw blades, such as those found on pull saws or coping saws, have a thickness of around 1/32 of an inch, making them ideal for this task. If you have a variety of tools available, simply choose a saw with a thin blade that will create a snug but not overly tight fit for your place cards.

Alternatively, you could use a rotary cutter, such as a Dremel, to create the slot. However, if you choose this method, it’s crucial to maintain a steady hand to ensure a consistent and even slot.

Cutting the Slot at a Slight Angle for Stability

Step 4: Cutting the Slot

Secure each wooden round in a vice, clamp, or with pliers to hold it firmly in place while you cut the slot. This is essential for safety and to ensure a clean, straight cut.

Using your chosen saw, carefully cut down into the round, approximately halfway through its thickness. Aim to cut the slot as close to the center of the round as possible to maintain balance.

For added stability, consider angling the blade slightly as you cut. This will cause the place card to lean back slightly, reducing the likelihood of it falling forward. A subtle angle is all that’s needed to make a significant difference.

Step 5: Finishing Touches (Optional)

If your branch was fairly dry when you found it, you can choose to add a finish to your place card holders to enhance their appearance and protect them from moisture. Options include staining, applying a clear coat, or sealing with wax.

However, if you prefer a more natural and rustic look, you can leave the wood unfinished. This allows the natural grain and texture of the wood to shine through. I personally opted to leave mine au natural for now, and I may consider adding a finish next year once they’ve fully dried and seasoned.
