The goal was to create a user-friendly experience for the guests, ensuring minimal effort on their part. It needed to automatically print the photos and capture a sequence of timed shots.
After some online research, I found several similar solutions, but none quite met my specific needs. To save you the time and effort of sifting through countless options, I’m sharing my own DIY photo booth solution, complete with download instructions. This solution is designed to be easy to set up, simple to use, and, most importantly, fun for everyone involved.
The core of this DIY photo booth is an Automator workflow designed to streamline the entire process. Automator, a built-in application on macOS, allows you to create automated workflows for various tasks, eliminating the need for complex programming knowledge. With this workflow, setting up a photo booth is as easy as running a simple file.
Update (February 16, 2016): The Automator action has been updated to ensure compatibility with OS X 11.1.

Here’s a breakdown of how the DIY photo booth software works:
- The software prompts the guest to enter their name. This allows for easy organization and identification of the photos later on.
- A unique folder is created specifically for that guest, ensuring their photos are kept separate and organized.
- The MacBook’s built-in camera (or an external webcam) captures three photos in quick succession. This provides a fun and dynamic photo strip.
- The individual photos are saved to the guest’s folder, preserving the original files.
- The software then combines the three photos into a vertical strip, creating the classic photo booth look.
- The photo strip is automatically printed, providing guests with an instant memento of the event.
- Finally, the computer is put to sleep, and the photos taken so far are used as the screensaver, adding a personal touch to the photo booth experience.
