Maximize Your Space: Building a Custom Window Desk

Living in a small apartment often presents challenges, especially when it comes to creating dedicated workspaces. We faced a similar dilemma in our 750 square foot apartment. While a spacious bedroom is a luxury, it felt like an inefficient use of space. However, with Liz starting graduate school, the need for a quiet and separate study area became crucial. The solution? A custom-built window desk designed to maximize space and functionality.

This project transformed an underutilized area into a stylish and practical workspace, perfectly tailored to our needs. It’s a DIY endeavor that combines affordability, customization, and space-saving design principles. Follow along as we guide you through the process of creating your own window desk, using readily available materials and basic woodworking techniques.

Our inspiration stemmed from two Ikea Billy bookshelves we had recently assembled on either side of the bedroom window. The idea was simple: build a desk that mounted seamlessly into the window frame, nestled between the bookshelves. This would create a cohesive, built-in look while utilizing the existing space efficiently. The key to this project is thoughtful planning and precise measurements, ensuring a snug and secure fit.

The foundation of our desk design involved a combination of Ikea and Home Depot components. Liz selected the Vika Alex drawer units from Ikea. We planned to use two of these units, along with the window frame itself, as a sturdy three-sided base for the desk. To complete the desk surface, we purchased a large piece of pressboard from Home Depot, providing a solid and customizable tabletop.

Step-by-Step Guide to Building Your Window Desk

Now, let’s delve into the detailed steps involved in constructing this space-saving window desk. From precise measurements to staining and assembly, we’ll cover each stage to ensure a successful and rewarding DIY experience.

1. Cutting and Preparing the Desk Top

The first crucial step is accurately cutting the pressboard to fit the window sill. We measured the interior width of the window sill, which was 68 inches. Carefully cut the wood to this dimension, ensuring a snug fit within the window frame. A circular saw or hand saw can be used for this step, depending on your comfort level and available tools.

After cutting the pressboard, it’s essential to sand the edges and surface to create a smooth and even finish. Start with a coarser grit sandpaper to remove any rough spots or imperfections, and then gradually move to finer grits for a polished look. This step is critical for achieving a professional-looking final product and ensuring a comfortable work surface.

2. Staining and Finishing the Wood

To enhance the appearance of the desk top and complement the surrounding decor, we opted for a Minwax black stain. Apply the stain evenly across the entire surface of the pressboard, following the manufacturer’s instructions. Allow the stain to dry completely before applying a second coat for a richer and more saturated color. Remember to work in a well-ventilated area and wear appropriate safety gear, such as gloves and a mask.

Once the stain is completely dry, consider applying a clear protective finish, such as polyurethane or varnish. This will help to seal the wood, protect it from scratches and spills, and enhance its durability over time. Apply several thin coats, allowing each coat to dry thoroughly before applying the next.

3. Assembling the Desk Base

With the desk top prepared, it’s time to assemble the base using the Ikea Vika Alex drawer units and the window frame. Position the drawer units on either side of the window frame, ensuring they are level and aligned properly. This will serve as the foundation for your desk.

Carefully position the stained desk top onto the drawer units and the window frame. Ensure that it is centered and flush with the edges of the base. Use screws to securely attach the desk top to the drawer units, drilling pilot holes first to prevent the wood from splitting. For added stability, consider using wood glue in addition to screws.

4. Integrating the Filing System

To maximize functionality, we decided to convert one of the drawer units into a filing system. This involved a few modifications to the drawers, allowing us to store important documents and keep the desk clutter-free. We repurposed rods from an old file cabinet to create the hanging file system within the drawer.

First, we removed the fronts from the two drawers that would form the filing drawer. Then, we bracketed them together to function as one taller drawer. Next, we removed the bottom of the top drawer, allowing files to hang freely into the lower drawer. Finally, we drilled holes into the sides of the top drawer to accommodate the filing rods, creating a functional and organized filing system.

5. Adding Power and Finishing Touches

To ensure easy access to electricity for a lamp, laptop charger, and other devices, we mounted a power strip to the underside of the desk top. This simple addition eliminates the need for unsightly extension cords and keeps the workspace neat and organized. Most power strips have mounting brackets on the back, making installation quick and easy.

As a final step, we gave the desk top one last sanding with a very fine-grit sandpaper (800 grit). This created an exceptionally smooth and polished surface, enhancing the overall look and feel of the desk. We also added a few personal touches, such as a desk lamp, a comfortable chair, and some decorative items to personalize the space.
