Punch into the fabric far enough for the base of the needle to touch the fabric. Bring the needle back up through the fabric, move down slightly (about 1/4 inch), and punch again. The closer you punch, the denser your stitches will be. Practice on a scrap piece of fabric to get a feel for the technique before starting on your actual design. This will help you develop a consistent rhythm and avoid making mistakes.

When bringing the needle to the next punch point, don’t pull too far up. Try and keep the tip of the needle touching the fabric as you move to the next spot. If you pull it up too far, your stitches will be uneven, and you’ll risk pulling out the loops you’ve already created. Maintain a consistent depth and spacing between each punch for a uniform look. Punch away!
