DIY Starburst Decor: Affordable Home Accents That Shine
Elevate your home decor with these dazzling DIY starburst accents! Inspired by the beauty of starbursts and sea urchins, this project is incredibly affordable and easy to create. Using simple materials from your local dollar store, you can craft unique pieces that add a touch of glamour to any room. Whether you’re looking for eye-catching wall art, elegant table decor, or a festive Christmas tree topper, these starburst creations are sure to impress.

Following the success of our previous starburst wall art DIY, I was inspired to create even more complimenting pieces. A recent trip to my local dollar store provided the perfect materials for this next project. I discovered crystal picks with a unique graduated triangular shape, offering a more dynamic look than standard bamboo skewers. And at just ninety-nine cents for a pack of one hundred, the price couldn’t be beat! I think the little vignette featuring these pieces looks pretty amazing.
Materials You’ll Need
Here’s what you need to create your own stunning starburst decor:
- Play dough (or generic colored dough)
- Acrylic crystal picks (Diamond brand recommended)
- Styrofoam ball (3″ diameter)
- Spray paint (optional, metallic gold shown)

Creating the Shorter Half Starburst/Urchin
This smaller piece is quick to make and adds a charming touch to any display.
Cost: $2
- Roll a can’s worth of play dough into a ball and flatten the bottom to create a stable base.
- Push approximately 100 crystal picks into the play dough, arranging them to create the urchin look. The clear acrylic picks offer a sleek, modern aesthetic reminiscent of lucite.

- Spray paint the entire piece with your desired color. Metallic gold adds a touch of glamour and complements other decor. I used leftover Rust-O-Leum spray paint from a previous project to keep costs down.

Note: While the play dough may not harden completely within the first 36 hours, it provides a secure base for the crystal picks. Over time, the play dough will continue to harden, further strengthening the structure of the piece.
Crafting the Full Standing Starburst/Urchin
This eye-catching piece stands tall and makes a dramatic statement.
Cost: $2.50
- Insert crystal picks into the styrofoam ball, covering the entire surface. Ensure the picks are pushed in as far as possible to provide stability and support the weight of the piece when standing. Use approximately 200 picks for full coverage.

- Spray paint the starburst with the color of your choice. The clear acrylic picks create a modern look. Here, metallic gold spray paint was used to match the other decor pieces.
Versatile Decor for Any Occasion
These DIY starburst decorations aren’t just for everyday decor! They can also be used as unique Christmas tree toppers, adding a touch of sparkle to your holiday celebrations.
The starbursts look fantastic grouped together, creating a cohesive and stylish display. I’m still deciding on their permanent home, but they may end up in a space I’m designing to showcase my growing collection of starburst creations. Alternatively, they could complement a bedroom wall paint job I completed a few months ago. I may even make a few more to scatter throughout my home. And I can’t resist—I’ve already made another trip to the dollar store to stock up on more crystal picks for future projects!

The beauty of these DIY starbursts lies in their versatility. You can customize them to match your existing decor by using different colors of spray paint, experimenting with various sizes of styrofoam balls, or incorporating other embellishments like glitter or beads.
