  • Iron and Ironing Board (Optional): While not strictly necessary, an iron and ironing board can help to create crisp folds and a professional finish.
  • Measuring Device (Optional): A ruler or measuring tape can be helpful, but you can also simply eyeball the measurements based on your template item.

Step-by-Step Guide to Making Fabric Gift Envelopes

Now that you have gathered all your materials, let’s begin creating these charming fabric gift envelopes. Follow these simple steps, and you’ll have a beautiful, handmade gift wrapping solution in no time!

Step 1: Prepare the Poster Board Template

Lay the item you want to wrap onto the poster board. This will serve as your template for determining the size of your envelope.

  1. Cut the Base: Cut a piece of poster board that is double the height of your item and approximately a quarter of an inch wider. This will form the main body of the envelope.
  2. Cut the Flap: Cut another piece of poster board that is approximately a quarter of an inch wider than the base piece and about 2/3 the height. This will serve as the envelope’s flap.

Step 2: Fold the Poster Board in Half

Grab one of the pieces of poster board (either the base or the flap) and fold it in half lengthwise. This creates a crease that will guide the fabric placement.

Step 3: Cut the Fabric

Unfold the poster board (with the valley fold facing up). Use it as a template to cut a piece of fabric that is approximately 1/2 inch larger on all sides. This extra fabric will allow you to wrap the edges around the poster board.

NOTE: Before we proceed with gluing, it’s important to consider the type of glue you’re using. PVA glue is generally recommended for most steps, but hot glue can also be used, except for the final step, where precision is key. If you don’t have PVA glue, Elmer’s glue or Mod Podge are suitable alternatives.

Step 4: Glue the First Edge

Apply glue to one of the long edges of the poster board. Make sure to apply the glue evenly to ensure a strong bond.

Fold the fabric up to the fold in the poster board. At this point, you can use a dry, hot iron to flatten everything and create crisp folds. You don’t need to wait for the glue to dry before ironing; it works just fine even with wet glue.

Unfold the fabric, apply glue to the folded-in edges, and then fold the fabric back up, pressing to glue it into place. This creates a secure and professional-looking finish.

The bottom of the envelope is now finished! It should be a perfect fit for your gift card or other small item. Repeat these steps with the other piece of poster board (the flap) to create the top of the envelope.

Expanding the Possibilities: Wrapping Larger Items
