Materials You’ll Need to Build Your PVC Christmas Tree

Before we begin, gather all the necessary materials. Here’s what you’ll need to create your own DIY PVC tabletop Christmas tree:

  • PVC Primer and Adhesive: For securely bonding the PVC pipes together. Alternatively, you can use E6000 glue, but traditional PVC adhesive offers a quicker and stronger bond.

  • Painter’s Tape: To create a template for your tree shape and keep everything aligned during assembly.
  • Dremel Saw-Max: This tool is ideal for cutting the PVC pipes quickly and accurately.
  • Dremel Micro Rotary Tool: Perfect for sanding down the edges of the cut PVC pipes to ensure a smooth and clean finish.
  • (Optional) Dremel 3D Idea Builder: If you want to add a unique touch, a 3D printer can be used to create custom ornaments or decorations for your tree.

Step-by-Step Guide to Building Your PVC Tabletop Christmas Tree

Follow these simple steps to create your own stunning PVC tabletop Christmas tree:

Step 1: Cut the PVC Pipes

Begin by cutting the PVC pipes into uniform lengths. We recommend 3″ sections, but you can adjust the length to suit your desired tree size and aesthetic.

Using the Dremel Saw-Max, carefully cut the piping. Note that for some larger diameters, the blade might not cut completely through the PVC in one pass. Rotate the pipe as you cut to ensure a clean and even cut. Always wear appropriate safety gear, including safety goggles and a dust mask, as PVC can splinter or shatter during cutting.

Step 2: Sand the Edges

Once your PVC pipes are cut, use the Dremel Micro rotary tool to sand the edges smooth. This will remove any sharp edges or burrs, ensuring a clean and professional finish.

Using your clear PVC cement, begin gluing the circles together. Apply the cement to the edges of the PVC pipes and press them firmly together. We initially used purple primer, but discovered it was unnecessary for this type of application. For non-plumbing projects, the primer isn’t essential.

Once assembled, let your tree dry for at least an hour to ensure the adhesive has fully set.

Step 5: Spray Paint Your Tree

After the glue has dried, spray paint your tree in your desired color. We used a white lacquer paint to cover the lettering and imperfections on the pipe sections, creating a clean and uniform look.

Step 6: Decorate and Display Your Creation

Now comes the fun part! Fill your new tabletop tree’s circles with ornaments, trinkets, or other decorative items. To add a unique touch, we used a Dremel 3D Idea Builder to print out small geometric snowballs. The 3D printer was incredibly easy to use, and each snowball took approximately 45 minutes to print. 3D printing opens up a whole new world of possibilities for DIY projects!
