Transforming Our Dingy Bathroom: A Home Renovation Journey

Last year marked a significant milestone for Al and me: the purchase of our very first home. Since then, we’ve been embarking on a series of exciting projects, tackling them one by one. What drew us to this house wasn’t just its structure, but the potential it held for customization and improvement. After completing a few smaller tasks, we felt it was time to leave our mark on this space, and what better place to start than the heart of functionality – our one and only bathroom?

We never envisioned ourselves as the type of homeowners who would dare to renovate their sole bathroom while still living in the house. The thought initially seemed daunting, perhaps even a bit crazy. Yet, we embraced the challenge with youthful enthusiasm, thinking, “We’re young, relatively low maintenance, so why not?” However, after enduring four grueling days without a functioning toilet, I began to question my self-proclaimed “low maintenance-ness.” But once we cleared that significant hurdle, the renovation process at The 387 Cottage began to flow smoothly. Besides, who needs a shower anyway, right?

Our renovation plan was refreshingly simple: completely gut the existing bathroom and start anew. At first glance, it might have seemed like there wasn’t anything fundamentally wrong with every square inch of the space. However, the closer you examined the walls, floor, fixtures, and everything else within the bathroom, the more apparent the flaws became, revealing themselves in every possible direction. We knew a complete overhaul was necessary to achieve the bathroom of our dreams.

The “before” photos truly speak for themselves! Looking at them now, it’s hard to believe this was our bathroom. You might think I’ve never cleaned a day in my life, but the truth is, even with endless scrubbing, you simply can’t fix years of neglect and outdated design. As a self-proclaimed OCD neat freak, this was a tough pill to swallow. Oh, and for those wondering about the duct tape behind the fan, you’re absolutely right! Who needs screws when you can just duct tape it in place, right? But beyond the grime and general disrepair, the two biggest offenses, in our opinion, were the awkward ceiling archway and the downright terrifying snake shower head.

That snake shower head! Just try not to look directly at it, and maybe it will disappear. That thing still haunts my dreams! It had to go – along with everything else in the space. Our plan was to completely gut the bathroom, but first, we needed a solid design. So, we turned to the internet for inspiration. We spent hours clicking through Pinterest, Lowe’s.com, and a few other favorite online haunts to gather ideas and kickstart our renovation journey.
