Next, take two of your 8-inch dowel pieces. Apply wood glue to the open ends of the copper elbow joints, and then insert one 8-inch dowel piece into each, creating a distinctive ‘U’ or bracket shape. This structure will form the top crossbar and initial vertical supports for one side of your rack. Ensure all connections are snug and allow a few minutes for the glue to set slightly before moving the piece.
Step 3: Construct the Lower Support Frames

Moving downwards, we will prepare the next section of the rack. Take two more of your 36-inch dowel pieces. Following the same gluing technique as before, apply wood glue to the inside of two 1/2″ copper tee joints and attach one to each end of both 36-inch dowels. These tee joints will allow you to connect additional vertical supports. Wipe away any excess glue immediately.
Next, prepare the feet of your rack. Take two of your 12-inch dowel pieces. Apply wood glue to the inside of two 1/2″ copper caps and attach one cap to one end of each 12-inch dowel. These capped dowels will form the very bottom of your rack’s legs, providing stability and a finished appearance. Set these aside to allow the glue to cure slightly.
Step 4: Connect the Frame Segments

Now it’s time to bring these prepared sections together to form one complete half of the drying rack. Take the 36-inch crossbar with the attached tee-joints (from Step 3) and securely glue it into the open ends of the two 8-inch dowel pieces that extend from the top section (from Step 2). Ensure these connections are firm and aligned. This forms the upper and middle crossbars.
Next, take two of your 12-inch dowel pieces (uncapped) and glue them into the lower, open sides of the tee-joints you just attached. These will be the next set of vertical supports. Below these, attach the second 36-inch crossbar with its pre-attached tee-joints. Finally, glue the two 12-inch capped dowel pieces (the feet from Step 3) into the lowest open ends of the tee-joints, forming the base of the legs. Carefully ensure all pieces are straight and aligned, then lay the entire assembled half on a very flat surface and allow it to dry completely. A flat surface is crucial to prevent warping.
Step 5: Duplicate for the Second Rack Half
Once the first half of your clothes drying rack has fully dried and the glue has cured, repeat Steps 2 through 4 to construct an identical second half. It’s important to ensure consistency in measurements and assembly for both sides to guarantee the rack folds and stands properly. Take your time with the second assembly, verifying that all pieces are symmetrical to the first half.
Step 6: Integrate the Collapsible Hinge Mechanism

With both halves of the drying rack completely dry, it’s time to add the hinges that allow it to collapse. Lay both finished halves next to each other on a flat surface, with their top 36-inch crossbars touching. Measure approximately six inches inward from each end of the rack’s top bar and mark these points. These marks indicate where your hinges will be placed. Position one small hinge at each marked point. Pre-drill small pilot holes to prevent the wood from splitting, then use your additional 1/2″ screws to secure each hinge in place. When attaching the hinges, ensure there is a slight gap (a few millimeters) between the two sections of the drying rack. This small gap is essential for the hinges to rotate freely, allowing the rack to open and close smoothly without binding.
Step 7: Add the Floating Dowel and Stability Cord
