DIY Spice Organizer: Declutter Your Kitchen & Maximize Flavor
Do you love to cook? We do! Our kitchen is a place of constant culinary exploration. We devour cookbooks, subscribe to food magazines, and relish spending entire weekends creating delicious meals. This passion, however, comes with a flavorful side effect: a vast and somewhat chaotic collection of spices.

We’re talking about a lot of spices. We prefer to buy our spices in bulk from ethnic markets and grind them ourselves for maximum flavor and freshness. This is great for culinary adventures, but not so great for cabinet organization. Our spice cabinet had become a jumble of bags, shakers, jars, and clips – a complete recipe for inefficiency and duplicated purchases.
Enough was enough! I decided it was time to tackle the spice situation head-on. My goals were simple: eliminate the mess, improve efficiency, and stop buying spices we already owned but couldn’t find. We still wanted to keep our daily-use spices in easily accessible jars (I’m a big fan of the RAJTAN containers from IKEA because they’re inexpensive and versatile).

And guess what? It worked! Here’s how you can create your own DIY spice organizer and bring order to your culinary chaos.
DIY Spice Organizer Solution: File Cabinet Inspired!
This spice organizer is inspired by the efficiency of a filing cabinet, providing thin, vertical storage with easy-to-read labels. The goal is to transform your spice collection into a well-organized and easily accessible resource.
Materials You’ll Need:
- Small storage boxes (approximately 7″ wide). Look for sturdy boxes that can hold a reasonable amount of spice packets. These look nice.
- Label maker. A label maker is essential for creating clear and consistent labels for your spices. I personally love my Dymo LetraTag.
- Clear packing tape and scissors. Packing tape will protect your labels and keep them securely attached to the spice bags.
- Sandwich-size zip-top bags. These bags are perfect for holding your spices and creating a filing system within your storage boxes. These are a great deal.
To develop this spice organizer system, I started brainstorming different ways to store a small amount of a large quantity of similar items. For some reason, the solution didn’t immediately come to mind, but then… I was inspired by the filing cabinet! The filing cabinet utilizes thin, vertical storage with easy-to-read labels.
I searched online for “file spice organizer” or “spice file cabinet,” but my search came up empty. (See?) Fortunately, we had some old boxes from IKEA (although I can’t find them on their website anymore). These boxes were the perfect size for holding sandwich-sized bags. Success!

To create your own spice organizer, begin by gathering all of your spices and deciding which ones will get their own “files.” I recommend alphabetizing them according to the main spice. For example, “green peppercorns” should be filed under P, not G. “Hot smoked paprika” would also be filed under P.

Print your labels and attach them to the front of each bag, near the zip. Most bags have one side that is higher than the other. Choose the shorter side. Next, cut a piece of clear packing tape and place it over the label. This secures the label to the bag, reinforces it, and protects it from spice-covered fingers. Wrap the tape around the top of the zip-top and secure it to the inside to create a file-folder-like label.

Now, it’s time to arrange your spices in your custom-made spice organizer. My boxes have removable dividers that keep everything upright. If your boxes don’t have dividers, you can use hot glue or craft glue to add some in, or you can create dividers out of cardboard. This series looks promising. You may need to remove items in front to access the contents of smaller spice bags. Just don’t overstuff your container with bags. You will be good to go!
Creating a spice organizer allows home chefs to see all the spices at once. You won’t be digging in a cluttered cabinet. The clear labels allow you to quickly identify the correct spice, whether it is herbs and spices, seasoning blends, or the spice allspice.
With this new space-saving solution, you can quickly locate the spice that you need. Instead of a messy spice rack, you can create a streamlined method for cooking. You can also quickly replenish your spices since you will see what you need to purchase at the store.
Organizing your spices is an investment in your well-being. By following these guidelines, you can improve your cooking, maximize space, and avoid stress. Having access to a well-organized spice collection turns cooking into an art form.

Do you want to enhance your flavor library? Then this method is ideal for improving your home cooking experience. There are also other methods that you can try that will give you greater control over your space.
A drawer organizer is ideal for creating extra space in your kitchen. You can organize your spices by how often you use the spice. A spice rack is also ideal for creating additional storage. You can also create a tiered rack that allows you to see all your spices.
With a well-organized spice collection, you will be ready to create meals that your family will enjoy!
