DIY Magnetic Towel Bar: The Ultimate Kitchen Space Saver
Is your kitchen suffering from a severe lack of counter space? Do you find yourself constantly battling clutter and struggling to find room to prepare meals? If you’re nodding along, you’re not alone! Many of us face the challenge of limited kitchen space, which can make cooking and organizing a real headache. But fear not! There’s a simple, stylish, and renter-friendly solution: a DIY magnetic towel bar.

In my own tiny kitchen, which I suspect holds some kind of record for miniature dimensions, I’ve learned the importance of maximizing every inch of available space. With just four drawers, a couple of cabinets, and a single countertop measuring a mere 2.5 square feet, I need to be strategic about kitchen organization to maintain my sanity. That’s why I embraced vertical storage, and this magnetic paper towel holder has been a game-changer.
This DIY project is incredibly versatile. You can use it as a bar to store hand towels, keeping them within easy reach while saving precious counter space. Or, as I prefer, you can use it as a magnetic paper towel holder, keeping your paper towels off the countertop and readily available. The best part? It utilizes magnets! And let’s be honest, who doesn’t love magnets? (Dwight Schrute certainly does!).

Think about all that unused space on the side of your refrigerator. It’s a blank canvas just waiting to be transformed into a functional storage area. This magnetic towel bar is the perfect solution! It attaches easily to your fridge, creating extra storage without taking up valuable counter or cabinet space. Plus, because it uses magnets, there’s no need to drill holes or make any permanent changes, making it ideal for renters. You can rest assured that your landlord will be happy to see the fridge in its original condition when your lease is up.
Materials You’ll Need
- Dowel rod (for the towel bar)
- Hand saw (for cutting the dowel rod)
- Sandpaper (for smoothing the edges)
- Gorilla Glue (for adhering the magnets)
- Clamps (to hold the pieces together while the glue dries)
- Vinyl or leather strap (for the hanging loops)
- Two small magnets (for attaching to the fridge)
- Decorative studs (for embellishing the straps)

Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Dowel Rod
First, you’ll need to cut the dowel rod to the desired length. I recommend 14 inches, which is long enough to accommodate a standard-sized roll of paper towels. Use a hand saw to make the cut. Once you’ve cut the dowel rod, use sandpaper to smooth out any rough edges. This will prevent splinters and give your towel bar a more polished look.
Step 2: Create the Hanging Loops

Next, you’ll create the hanging loops that will attach the towel bar to the magnets. Cut two strips from the vinyl or leather strap, each measuring 11 inches in length. Fold each strip in half. About 1 inch from the fold, insert a decorative stud through both layers of the folded strap. This will secure the loop and add a decorative touch. Use a hard object, like the back of a spoon or pliers, to fold the feet of the stud closed, ensuring they are securely fastened.
Step 3: Attach the Magnets

Now it’s time to attach the magnets to the straps. Apply a second stud about an inch from the end of the strap, going through only one layer of the material. Make sure the second stud is facing in the same direction as the first. This will create a secure base for the magnet. Next, apply Gorilla Glue to both sides of a magnet and adhere it between the ends of the strap behind the stud. The order should be: stud on top, one end of the strap, magnet, and then the other end of the strap. This “sandwich” construction will ensure the magnet is securely attached and won’t come loose over time.
Step 4: Secure and Assemble

Use clamps to hold the ends of the strap in place until the glue dries completely. This is crucial for ensuring a strong and durable bond. Repeat the gluing process for the other strap. Once the glue has dried on both straps, it’s time to assemble the towel bar. Simply insert the dowel rod through the looped ends of the straps.
To use your new magnetic paper towel holder, remove the dowel from one of the loops, slide a roll of paper towels onto the dowel, and then put the dowel back in the loop. It’s that easy! This simple project will instantly free up valuable counter space and keep your paper towels within easy reach.

In my own small kitchen, the refrigerator has become a multi-functional storage hub. In addition to the essentials, it also houses an apron on a magnetic hook, a stack of clipped coupons, and even cookie sheets stored on top. My fridge is a true workhorse!
