DIY Pool Lounger Organizer in Progress

When I crafted my pool lounger organizer, I meticulously measured the lounger at my apartment complex’s pool. It’s crucial to note that lounger sizes may vary, so it’s best to measure your specific lounger before cutting your fabric. If you’re unsure about sizing, err on the side of caution and make the organizer slightly longer to accommodate wider chairs. An organizer that’s too big is far better than one that’s too small.

Regardless of the specific size, the convenience of this organizer is undeniable. I always keep it in tow when I head to the pool. For optimal results, use a combination of outdoor fabrics, ensuring that your organizer is both washable and durable. Simply lay your towel on top or underneath the organizer, and you’re ready to soak up the sunshine in comfort and style!

Using the right fabric is important because it ensures that the organizer can withstand the elements, frequent use, and potential spills. Selecting durable, water-resistant materials will prolong the life of your project and keep your essentials protected. Make sure your fabric choices can also be thrown into the washing machine for convenient cleaning.

Materials You’ll Need

Before you begin, gather the following materials. Having everything on hand will streamline the sewing process and ensure a smooth and enjoyable crafting experience.

  • 1 yard solid outdoor fabric: Choose a color that complements your style and existing poolside decor. Outdoor fabric is designed to withstand the elements, resisting fading and water damage.
  • 1/4 yard patterned outdoor fabric: Use this for the pockets to add a touch of personality and visual interest. Select a pattern that coordinates well with your solid fabric.
  • Fabric scissors: Sharp fabric scissors are essential for clean and precise cuts. Dull scissors can snag the fabric and create uneven edges.
  • Pins: Pins are used to hold the fabric pieces together while you sew, ensuring that they stay in place and preventing shifting.
  • Thread: Choose a thread that matches the color of your solid fabric. High-quality thread is less likely to break or fray during sewing.
  • Sewing machine: A sewing machine will make the process much faster and more efficient. If you don’t have a sewing machine, you can also sew by hand, but it will take considerably longer.
  • Iron (recommended): An iron will help you create crisp, clean seams, resulting in a more professional-looking finished product.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Now that you have all your materials, let’s get started! Follow these step-by-step instructions to create your own pool lounger organizer.

Cutting the Fabric

Step 1: Cut and Iron the Fabric

Cut two pieces of solid fabric to approximately 42 inches x 18 inches. These will form the main body of the organizer. Cut two pieces of patterned fabric to approximately 18 inches x 8 inches. These will be used for the pockets. Iron all pieces of fabric to remove any wrinkles and creases.

Sewing the Pocket Seams

Step 2: Create the Pocket Seams

Fold the long edge of both patterned pieces over about 1/2 inch and pin in place. Sew across the folded edge to create a clean, finished seam for the top of the pocket. This will prevent the raw edge of the fabric from fraying.

Pinning the Pockets

Step 3: Pin the Pockets to the Main Fabric

Pin each pocket piece to both ends of one piece of solid fabric. Set aside the second solid-colored piece for later. Pin where you would like the individual pockets to be positioned. Use everyday items, like your cell phone or e-reader, as a guide to determine the appropriate size for each pocket. Each end can comfortably accommodate 3-4 pockets.

Step 4: Sew the Pocket Compartments

Sew up the sides of the pocket and up multiple sections, backstitching at each end to secure each pocket compartment. This creates individual pockets within the larger pocket piece. Backstitching reinforces the seams and prevents them from unraveling.

Sewing the Organizer Together

Step 5: Sew the Organizer Together

Place the second solid-colored piece of fabric on top of the first piece (right sides together) and pin all the way around the perimeter. Mark a few inches in one corner with pins, leaving this section open. Sew all the way around the organizer, leaving the marked section unsewn. This opening will be used to turn the organizer right side out.

Turning the Organizer Right Side Out

Step 6: Turn and Iron the Seams

Turn the fabric right side out through the opening you left in the previous step. Use your fingers or a point turner to push out the corners and create sharp edges. Iron all the seams down to create a clean and professional finish.

Finishing the Edges

Step 7: Finish the Edges

Fold in the seam of the open section and pin in place. Sew a 1/4-inch top stitch all the way around the edge of the pool lounger organizer. This will close the opening and create a neat and durable edge.
