Begin by removing any glass panels that are held in place by metal tabs. These tabs are usually easy to bend or pry open, allowing you to carefully slide the glass panels out. Next, focus on detaching the back bracket that was used to mount the fixture to the wall. This bracket is typically secured with screws, which can be easily removed using a Phillips screwdriver.

Underneath the back bracket, you may find another bracket that needs to be removed. This bracket may serve as additional support or housing for the electrical components. Once you’ve removed all the brackets, it’s time to address the socket.

Using wire cutters, carefully snip the wires at the top of the socket (on the inside of the fixture). This will allow you to detach the socket and the decorative arm that sits on top of it. Be sure to cut the wires cleanly to avoid any potential hazards later on.

With the socket and decorative arm removed, you should be able to detach the top of the fixture. By this point, you should have the light fixture completely disassembled into its individual components. The entire disassembly process should take no more than 20 minutes.

Step 2: Cleaning the Disassembled Pieces

Once you’ve disassembled the light fixture, it’s time to give the individual pieces a thorough cleaning. This will remove any dirt, dust, or grime that has accumulated over time, ensuring a clean and polished finish for your new indoor lantern. Use a mild soap and water solution to gently scrub each piece, paying attention to any intricate details or hard-to-reach areas. Rinse the pieces thoroughly with clean water and allow them to dry completely before moving on to the next step.

I was lucky enough to have a dedicated lamp parts bin where I salvaged a finial from an old outdoor fixture.

Simply insert the threaded tube through the top of the lantern and secure it with the nut from the inside. Then, screw the finial onto the threaded tube until it is snug and secure.

Step 4: Applying a Fresh Coat of Paint

The finish of the original light fixture may be in good condition, but applying a fresh coat of paint can give it a whole new look. I chose to use Rust-Oleum ORB, a go-to metallic spray paint that provides a durable and attractive finish. Before painting, be sure to protect the surrounding area with newspaper or a drop cloth. Apply the paint in thin, even coats, allowing each coat to dry completely before applying the next. This will prevent drips and ensure a smooth, professional-looking finish.

Let the paint dry completely. This may take several hours or even overnight, depending on the type of paint you use and the humidity levels in your area.

Step 5: Adding Protective Feet

To protect your furniture from scratches and scuffs, consider adding protective ‘feet’ to the bottom corners of the lantern. I used chunks of cork, which I hot-glued to the bottom corners. You can also use felt pads or other similar materials.

Simply apply a small amount of hot glue to the bottom corner of the lantern and press the cork piece firmly into place. Repeat this process for each of the four corners. The cork feet will provide a soft barrier between the lantern and your furniture, preventing any potential damage.

Now comes the fun part: adding the light source! You have several options to choose from, depending on your preferences and the desired ambiance. To add the twinkle lights, simply stuff the string of lights inside the lantern, arranging them in a way that distributes the light evenly. You can also use a battery-operated candle or a small LED light. Experiment with different light sources to find the one that best suits your style.
