Playroom Refresh: Cultivating Creativity for Growing Minds

Transforming a Sunroom into a Dream Playroom: A Family-Focused Makeover

We successfully transformed our 1,200 square foot home into a vibrant and functional space for our family of four to live, work, and thrive. What you don’t see in these photos is our newborn, who has temporarily made this room his home base, complete with a bassinet and a calming sound machine. It’s an adjustment, but we’re making it work! The real game-changer, the thing that has put my mama-heart at ease, is the transformation of our once-forgotten sunroom. Turning it into a cozy and welcoming playroom for our newborn has eased the transition into our new family dynamic, and it has helped our toddler accept the fact that he is no longer an only child. All of this is thanks to a little bit of vision and the perfect shades of paint from Sherwin-Williams.

Sunroom to Playroom: A Before-and-After Transformation

Let’s dive into the details of this incredible transformation. It’s amazing how much you can achieve with a little creativity and the right resources. With a growing family, maximizing space becomes essential, and this sunroom was the perfect blank canvas.

Before and After | From sunroom to playroom, see how we made space for our growing family.

Since the room itself was relatively small, we had to be strategic about utilizing every available inch. One entire wall is comprised of windows, which left us with only three walls to work with. We decided to line the longest wall with shelves, making the most of the vertical space. These shelves now house a variety of essentials, including books, toys, diapers, and other playroom necessities. This vertical storage solution has been a game-changer in keeping the space organized and clutter-free.

Color and Design: Creating a Playful and Inviting Atmosphere

Choosing the right colors was crucial in creating the desired atmosphere for the playroom. With the help of the knowledgeable employees at our local Sherwin-Williams store, we selected the perfect neutral gray paint colors for both the walls and the floor. We even utilized the ColorSnap® app to visualize how these colors would look in our space before committing, ensuring we made the right choice. To add a touch of playful energy, we incorporated lime green accents, which provide a fun pop of color against the otherwise neutral backdrop of the white shelves. We carefully matched the lime green paint to the color of our playroom chairs, creating a cohesive and visually appealing design. With all this shelving, we now have ample storage space to keep the playroom tidy and organized.

Unleashing Creativity: An Art Station for Budding Artists

We dedicated one of the remaining walls to create a dedicated art station for our son. We built a custom desk and installed shelves above it to hold all of his art supplies. The desk has quickly become one of his favorite features of the room. To make it even more special, we painted the desk with Sketch Pad™ dry erase coating, allowing him to draw directly on the surface with dry-erase markers. Of course, we had to emphasize that this was the *only* surface he was allowed to write on! This feature has not only fostered his creativity but also made clean-up a breeze.

The beauty of this transformation is that it has provided everyone in the family with their own designated space. We’re excited to witness our boys grow from brothers into friends in this special playroom in the years to come.

Creating the Perfect Playroom: Tips and Takeaways

Transforming a sunroom into a functional and inspiring playroom requires careful planning and execution. Here are some key takeaways from our experience that can help you create the perfect playroom for your own growing family:

  • Maximize Vertical Space: In small rooms, utilizing vertical space is crucial. Shelving units, wall-mounted storage, and hanging organizers can significantly increase storage capacity without taking up valuable floor space.
  • Choose the Right Colors: Color plays a vital role in setting the mood of a room. Opt for calming neutrals as a base and add pops of color to create a playful and inviting atmosphere.
  • Create Dedicated Zones: Designate specific areas for different activities, such as reading, art, and play. This helps children focus and stay organized.
  • Incorporate Creative Elements: Add fun and engaging elements, such as a chalkboard wall, a dry-erase desk, or a teepee, to stimulate children’s creativity and imagination.
  • Prioritize Storage: Ample storage is essential for keeping a playroom tidy and organized. Use bins, baskets, and shelves to store toys, books, and art supplies.
  • Make it Personal: Decorate the playroom with personal touches, such as family photos, children’s artwork, and favorite toys, to create a space that feels warm and inviting.
  • Safety First: Ensure that the playroom is safe for children by using child-safe furniture, securing heavy objects, and covering sharp edges.

By following these tips, you can create a playroom that is not only functional and organized but also inspiring and enjoyable for your children. Remember, the goal is to create a space where they can learn, play, and grow, fostering their creativity, imagination, and social skills.
