• Faux leather fabric (or repurpose a worn-out leather purse or jacket!). This adds a touch of luxury and texture.
• Embroidery floss in your desired color. Choose a color that contrasts nicely with the stocking and leather for a striking effect.
• Embroidery needles with large eyes. These needles are designed to easily accommodate thicker embroidery floss.
• Sewing pins to hold the leather letter in place while you stitch.
• A large letter printed onto cardstock. This will serve as your template for cutting out the leather monogram.

Step-by-Step Instructions: Crafting Your Leather Monogram Stocking

Now that you have all your materials gathered, let’s dive into the fun part: creating your personalized leather monogram stocking! Follow these simple steps, and you’ll have a beautiful addition to your holiday decor in no time.

Step 1: Preparing the Leather Letter

First, cut out the letter you printed on cardstock. This will be your template. Then, trace the letter onto the back of the leather or faux leather fabric. The font I used for my “M” is trendsetter, but feel free to choose any font that suits your style!

Important Tip: Make sure to trace the letter onto the fabric backwards (mirror image), so it faces the right way when you cut it out! This is crucial to ensure the letter appears correctly on the stocking.

Once you’ve traced the letter, carefully cut it out with a pair of fabric scissors. Take your time and follow the lines closely for a clean and professional look.

Step 2: Positioning and Pinning the Letter

Now, position the leather letter onto the stocking where you want it to be. Use sewing pins to carefully pin the letter onto the stocking, ensuring it’s securely in place. Be extra careful to pin it to only one side of the stocking, not all the way through. Otherwise, you might end up sewing the stocking shut!

Next, thread the needle with embroidery floss and tie a knot at the end. Make sure the knot is secure to prevent the thread from pulling through as you stitch.

Step 3: Starting the Blanket Stitch

Okay, the first stitch of the blanket stitch can be a little tricky, but don’t worry, it gets much easier after that! From inside the stocking, push the needle through the stocking fabric so it lines up right at the edge of the leather letter. Pull the thread all the way through, so the knot is hidden on the inside of the stocking.

Now, push the needle down into the leather and the top layer of the stocking fabric, then back up through the stocking fabric in the same spot as the first hole you made. Pull the thread through almost all the way, until you are left with a small loop.

Insert the needle into the loop from front to back.

Then, pull the thread all the way through. Congratulations, you’ve completed your first stitch!

Step 4: Continuing the Blanket Stitch

To make the second stitch, start about 1/4 of an inch to the right of the first stitch. Push the needle down through the letter and the top layer of the stocking fabric, then back up through the stocking fabric at the edge of the letter.

Pull the thread almost all the way through, until you have that small loop again.

Insert the needle into the loop from front to back, and pull the thread all the way through. That’s your second stitch! (Note: The image may show three stitches, but the process is the same).

Step 5: Stitching Around the Letter

Now you’ve got the hang of it! Keep stitching the blanket stitch all the way around the letter. Try to maintain a consistent spacing between your stitches for a neat and uniform look.

When you’re stitching around curves and corners, make slightly smaller stitches that are a little closer together. This will help the letter maintain its shape and prevent any puckering.

Step 6: Finishing the Stitching

When you’ve embroidered all the way back to the first stitch, make your last stitch and pull the needle through the loop created by the first stitch. This will create a seamless connection and secure the entire monogram.

Pull the thread through, then insert the needle into the top layer of the stocking and tie off with a knot inside the stocking. This will hide the knot and prevent it from unraveling.

Step 7: Add Finishing Touches (Optional)

You can add a few tassels for some extra embellishment, if desired. Simply cut several strands of embroidery floss and tie them together at one end.
