DIY Denim Overalls: Upcycle Your Old Jeans into Stylish Workwear

Ready to give your old jeans a new lease on life? This summer, transform them into a functional and fashionable pair of overalls perfect for gardening, DIY projects, or simply making a statement. This upcycling project is not only a great way to reduce waste but also a fantastic opportunity to express your creativity. Follow our step-by-step guide to create your own unique denim overalls.

What You’ll Need

To embark on this exciting DIY journey, gather the following materials:

  • Two pairs of jeans (preferably one larger pair for the base)
  • Seam ripper
  • Sewing machine
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • Measuring tape or ruler
  • Thread that matches your denim

Now, let’s dive into the process of transforming those old jeans into a stylish and practical pair of overalls!

Step-by-Step Guide to Making Denim Overalls

Step 1: Preparing the Base Jeans

Start with the larger pair of jeans. These will form the main body of your overalls. Lay them out on a flat surface.

Step 2: Removing the Waistband and Belt Loops

Using the seam ripper, carefully detach the bottom of each belt loop from the jeans. This will allow you to remove the entire waistband.

Once the belt loops are free, gently remove the entire top part of the jeans, separating the legs from the waistband and upper section. Save the top piece, as you’ll need it later for creating the overall straps.

Step 3: Opening the Side Seams

Using the seam ripper again, carefully rip open the seams on both sides of the jeans legs. This will allow you to flatten the denim and create a wider base for the overalls.

Step 4: Cutting the Second Pair of Jeans

Take the second pair of jeans and lay them flat. Use the length of the first pair as a guide to determine how much of the legs to cut off from the front. You’re essentially creating a “bib” section for the overalls.

Step 5: Attaching the Front Panels

Pin the cut leg pieces from the second pair of jeans to each side of the first pair, creating the front panels of the overalls. Ensure that the edges align and the panels are evenly positioned.

Once the panels are securely pinned, use the sewing machine to sew them in place. Use a straight stitch and reinforce the seams for durability.

Step 6: Creating the Back Bib

Now, take the remaining parts of the legs from the second pair of jeans and cut them off completely, leaving you with what resembles a pair of shorts.

Step 7: Attaching the Back Pieces

Take the front piece of the cut shorts and pin it to the back of the first pair of jeans, creating the upper back portion of the overalls. Fold in the sides and pin them securely in place.

Step 8: Creating the Straps

Take one of the leftover leg pieces and cut out an equal rectangle. Fold it in half and cut down the crease to create two strips. These strips will serve as the straps for your overalls.

Step 9: Gathering the Sides (Optional)

For a more fitted look, take another leftover piece of denim and cut out two strips. Use these strips to gather the sides of the overalls. Poke a hole through all the layers of fabric on both sides and thread a strip through. Tie the strip to create a gathered effect.
