  • Wood Glue: A reliable wood glue is essential for creating strong and durable bonds between the wooden components.
  • Hand Saw: This is the primary cutting tool for shaping the wood pieces. A power saw can also be used for faster cuts.
  • Tape Measure: Accurate measurements are crucial for ensuring the shelf’s structural integrity and aesthetic appeal.
  • Level: To guarantee that all the shelves are straight and level, using a level is important to make sure your creations are visually balanced.
  • Rags: Rags are useful for cleaning up excess glue and wiping down surfaces.
  • Painter’s Tape or Masking Tape: These tapes are ideal for securing the wood pieces together while the glue dries, providing added stability.
  • White Paint: This will give the shelf a clean and modern look. Choose a paint that complements your existing decor.
  • Paint Brush: A good-quality paint brush will ensure a smooth and even paint application.
  • Pencil: A pencil is needed for marking measurements and drawing cutting lines on the wood.
  • Sandpaper (Medium Grit): Sandpaper is used to smooth out rough edges and prepare the wood surface for painting.
  • Sheets of Wood (1/8 inch thick): Baltic Birch (in a large sheet) and 3″ wide lengths of Balsa wood were used for this project.
  • Instant Bond Wood Adhesive and Activator: This provides a quick initial bond to hold the pieces together while the wood glue sets.

  1. Draw the Triangle Base: Using a straightedge and pencil, carefully measure and draw a tall triangle on one of your sheets of wood. This will serve as the foundation of your Christmas tree shelf. My triangle is 23 inches tall and 17 inches wide at the widest point.
  2. Measure and Cut the Wood Strips: Measure each side of the triangle to determine the necessary cuts for the smaller balsa wood strips. Remember that these strips will be glued on top of the triangle base, so factor that into your measurements. You’ll also need to create a rectangular stump for the tree’s trunk and two pieces that will become the shelves inside the triangle. As an additional guide, the tree trunk is 6 inches wide and almost 4 inches tall.
  3. Cut the Wood Pieces: Using your hand saw (or power tools if preferred), carefully cut each piece of wood according to your measurements. Precision is key to ensuring a snug and aesthetically pleasing fit.
  4. Dry Fit the Pieces: Before applying any glue, double-check that all the cut pieces fit together properly. Use tape and extra pairs of hands to stand everything up and ensure it aligns correctly. This step helps identify any potential issues and allows for adjustments before committing to the glue.
  5. Gluing the Pieces: Apply a thin bead of wood glue to every joint, both inside and out. Smear the glue smooth with your fingertip to ensure even distribution. Use a damp cloth to wipe away any excess glue before it dries. *The wood glue takes a while to dry and it does not hold the wood up without clamps. So, instant bond wood adhesive and activator (a super fast drying glue) can be used to hold the pieces together initially, then glue everything to the base with wood glue.
  6. Secure with Tape: For added security, tape everything with painter’s tape as it dries, ensuring that the pieces are pressed together snugly. The tape acts as a clamp, providing additional support and preventing any shifting during the drying process.
  7. Attach the Back Support: Once the wood glue has completely dried according to the manufacturer’s instructions, flip the triangle over and attach a long strip of wood to the back. Allow this strip to dangle off the bottom of the triangle by 2-3 inches. This overhang will serve as the support for the tree stump when it’s attached.
  8. Attach the Tree Stump: After the back support has dried completely, flip the triangle over again and attach the tree stump to the overhang using wood glue. Ensure that the stump is aligned correctly and securely bonded to the support.
  9. Sanding and Cleaning: Allow the glue to dry completely before moving on to the finishing stages. Once dry, sand the entire surface, both interior and exterior, to create a smooth and even finish. Then, wipe away any dust and debris with a damp cloth, preparing the surface for painting.
  10. Painting and Finishing: Apply several coats of paint to the entire piece, allowing each coat to dry completely before applying the next. Once the paint is dry, attach a hook to the back of the shelf for easy hanging.

Display and Enjoy

Your modern wooden Christmas tree shelf is now complete! Use it to store small items, showcase collections, or display your favorite holiday knick-knacks. This unique shelf will undoubtedly add a touch of festive charm to your home decor.
