The inspiration for this project came from a rather large and undeniably wobbly picnic table we inherited when we purchased one of our rental properties. It was functional, but let’s just say it desperately needed a makeover. I decided to recycle what I could from the existing structure – specifically, the metal frame – and build a brand new tabletop and seating area that could comfortably accommodate eight people. Keep reading to discover how I built this extra-large picnic table that seats eight people comfortably.
While I utilized an existing metal frame in my build, I understand that most people won’t have access to such a resource. That’s why I’m going to show you how to construct your own sturdy and reliable table legs using readily available 2×4 lumber. This approach ensures that everyone can easily recreate this project, regardless of their access to pre-existing materials.
Building Your Own Extra Large Picnic Table: A Step-by-Step Guide
Get ready to transform your outdoor space with this fantastic DIY project! This extra-large picnic table is perfect for family gatherings, summer barbecues, or simply enjoying a meal in the great outdoors. Follow these detailed instructions to create your own stunning and functional picnic table.
Tools and Materials You’ll Need:
- (5) Pressure treated 2 x 10 x 8′ boards (for the tabletop and benches)
- (4) Pressure treated 2 x 4 x 8′ boards (for the table legs and supports)
- (34) 1/4″ galvanized carriage bolts (2″ long), washers, and nuts
- Builder’s Square
- Socket Set
- Hammer
- Tape Measure
- Sandpaper and Palm Sander
- Chop Saw or Skill Saw
- Spray Paint (if you choose to paint the legs)
Now that you’ve gathered all your tools and materials, let’s get started!
Step 1: Constructing the Table Legs
As I mentioned earlier, I repurposed a metal frame from the original picnic table. However, for this tutorial, we’ll focus on building the legs from scratch using 2×4 lumber. This is a simple and effective method that provides a sturdy and reliable base for your picnic table.
If you have access to metal legs, feel free to use them. However, using pressure treated wood is a great way to add a natural look to your picnic table while providing excellent outdoor durability.
Refer to the diagram above for the specific measurements needed to recreate the leg frames using 2x4s. Here are a few important points to keep in mind:
- The 2′ piece and the 4′ 6″ piece of 2×4 should be oriented on their “fat side” (the 4-inch side) rather than laying flat (the 2-inch side). This provides greater stability and strength to the leg assembly.
- You will need to create two identical leg assemblies for the picnic table.
The diagram above illustrates how to fasten the frame pieces together using (12) of the carriage bolts, washers, and nuts. Ensuring that the frame is securely assembled is crucial for the stability of the entire picnic table.
Pay close attention to the following details:
- The middle support (the 1′ 8″ piece) should be attached at a 45-degree angle to the 4′ 6″ piece, positioned on center.
- Leave the other end of the middle support free-floating until the tabletop is in place. This allows for adjustments and ensures a proper fit.
Before attaching the pieces, pre-drill the holes for the carriage bolts. To prevent splintering, hold a scrap piece of wood on the opposite side of the 2×4 while drilling. This provides support and ensures a clean, professional-looking hole.
Once the holes are drilled, carefully attach the leg pieces together using the carriage bolts, washers, and nuts. Tighten the bolts securely, but avoid over-tightening, which could damage the wood.
Step 2: Attaching the Benches and Tabletop
Now comes the fun part – attaching the benches and the tabletop to the newly constructed legs! This is where your picnic table starts to take shape and you can begin to envision the finished product.
Follow these steps to ensure proper placement and attachment:
- Measure in 16″ on each side of the 2 x 10 x 8′ boards and draw a faint line. These lines will mark the locations for attaching the legs to the tabletop and benches.
- On the 16″ faint line, mark two drill holes 3″ in from each side. These holes will accommodate the carriage bolts.
- Again, pre-drill the holes while holding a scrap piece on the opposite side of the 2 x 10 to prevent splintering.
Attach the middle piece of the tabletop to the legs using one carriage bolt per leg assembly. It is important to ensure the board is perfectly square. Use the builder’s square to verify that the board is sitting at a perfect 90-degree angle to the legs.
Use a hammer to gently drive the carriage bolts through the newly drilled holes. Drive the bolts until the heads are counter-sunk to be flush with the tabletop surface. This creates a smooth and professional finish.
On the underside of the tabletop, attach the washer and the nut to the protruding end of the carriage bolt. Tighten the nut securely to hold the tabletop board firmly in place. Repeat this process for each leg assembly.
Attach the remaining carriage bolts to the first piece of the tabletop, ensuring that they are securely fastened.
Next, attach the two benches to the legs using the same method. Carefully align the benches with the legs and pre-drill the holes. Then, insert the carriage bolts, washers, and nuts, and tighten them securely.
Finally, attach the two remaining outer pieces of the tabletop to complete the surface of the picnic table. Make sure that all boards are aligned properly and that the carriage bolts are securely fastened.
Throughout the entire process, use the builder’s square to ensure a 90-degree angle between the tabletop and the leg assemblies. This is crucial for the stability and structural integrity of the picnic table.
Once the tabletop and benches are securely attached, connect the supporting 45-degree angle piece to the tabletop. Drill down from the tabletop and use a scrap piece of wood to prevent splintering on the other side.
Step 3: Finishing Touches and Enjoying Your New Picnic Table
Congratulations! You’ve successfully built your own extra-large picnic table. Now it’s time for the finishing touches and the best part – enjoying your creation!
Before using your new picnic table, take some time to sand down any rough edges or splinters. This will ensure a smooth and comfortable surface for everyone to enjoy. You can use sandpaper and a palm sander for this task.
If desired, you can paint or stain your picnic table to match your outdoor decor. Choose a paint or stain that is specifically designed for outdoor use and that will protect the wood from the elements. Allow the paint or stain to dry completely before using the table.
Once your picnic table is finished and dry, it’s time to put it to use! Gather your family and friends, prepare a delicious meal, and enjoy a memorable gathering around your new extra-large picnic table.
