For years, my husband Al and I have battled the barrenness of our living room wall. I affectionately referred to it as the “desolate wasteland of blank space.” The culprit? A gigantic flat-screen TV, a relic from Al’s bachelor days that somehow survived the transition to our shared domestic life. To me, it was an eyesore so profound that the only coping mechanism I could muster was to ignore its existence, hoping for inspiration to strike. This burden began in our first apartment, where we excused it on our temporary and unowned status, and followed us to our new house, where it remained in its exact same state of sorry neglect.

Sigh… I was genuinely stumped. How could I possibly fix this big, blank, and frankly, harsh expanse of nothingness? Then, inspiration struck when I stumbled upon an image from a favorite designer. Suddenly, I knew there was hope for my wall of despair.

The Gallery Wall Revelation: Camouflaging the TV with Style

A gallery wall! Why hadn’t I considered this brilliant solution from the outset? It seemed like the perfect way to camouflage the TV without resorting to building a bulky and imposing entertainment unit. However, I was acutely aware of the potential pitfalls of gallery walls. All too easily, you can find yourself drowning in a sea of mismatched frames, clashing images, and a layout that is fundamentally wrong in ways you can’t even articulate. (Perhaps I’m speaking from personal experience here.)

Despite my trepidations, we decided to take the plunge. I sourced some beautiful light bronze frames from a local craft store, each costing around $20. I then added a couple of unique prints and a captivating map from online. We were almost there, but something was still missing. The wall needed a little extra flair and uniqueness.

Inspiration struck once again on a lazy Saturday morning, this time for my husband, Al. During his routine scroll through Restoration Hardware’s newly added online inventory, he discovered a shelf design that sparked our imagination:

It appeared simple enough: a few pieces of hardware and a block of wood. While unassuming, we felt it would be just the element we needed to complete the wall and add a modern, industrial touch. So, we embarked on a treasure hunt to Home Depot in search of supplies. We located galvanized piping in the plumbing section and a few 2×6’s in the lumber aisle and made our way home, ready to transform these raw materials into something special.

The DIY Process: Sanding, Painting, and Installation

The process was straightforward and rewarding. A little sanding to smooth the rough edges, a coat of paint to achieve the desired aesthetic, a little installing, and voilà! We had crafted our very own pair of modern shelves with an industrial edge. The shelves perfectly complemented the gallery wall, adding depth and visual interest to the space.
