DIY Dollar Store Light Fixture: A Budget-Friendly Makeover
Looking to spruce up your home decor without emptying your wallet? This tutorial will show you how to create a stylish and unique light fixture using materials from your local dollar store. It’s a fun and easy project that adds a personal touch to any room. Remember that eye-catching light fixture from my dollar store kitchen makeover? Well, it’s time I finally shared the secrets behind its creation!
Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you recreate this budget-friendly masterpiece.
Important Safety Note: Before we begin, let’s address safety. This project involves working with electrical components. Ensure you’re comfortable and knowledgeable about basic electrical safety. The materials used are fairly heat-resistant, and there is absolutely no direct contact between the light bulb and the shade or any of the wiring. If you have any doubts about the safety of this project, it’s always best to purchase a pre-made light fixture to avoid potential hazards. Safety should always come first!
Materials You’ll Need
To create your own dollar store light fixture, gather the following materials:
- Plastic Salad Bowl: Choose one from the dollar store. It should be made of fairly durable plastic, not a flimsy, disposable type.
- Flexible Plastic Cutting Board: Another dollar store find.
- Sharp Craft Knife: For precise cutting.
- Fine Sandpaper: For creating a frosted glass effect.
- Existing Light Fixture: You’ll repurpose the electrical components from this.
This is the light fixture I started with. It was perfectly functional, but the glass lampshade had unfortunately met an untimely end. I am pretty sure I heard my sweetie mumble “HULK SMASH”, but I digress…
Step-by-Step Instructions
-
Measure and Mark
The first step is determining the size of the hole needed in the salad bowl to fit over the bulb holder. Carefully measure the diameter of the part of your existing fixture that will need to pass through the hole in the bowl. Then, find the center of the salad bowl (approximately) and mark it. This will be the center of your hole.
Notice that I marked out a square instead of a circle. Cutting a square is significantly easier, trust me!
-
Cut the Hole
Using your sharp craft knife, VERY slowly score around the markings you made. Apply gentle pressure to avoid cracking the plastic. Repeat this scoring process multiple times, gradually deepening the cut each time. Patience is key here! Eventually, you’ll cut all the way through, creating a hole in the bowl. (You may encounter some minor cracks, but don’t worry too much.)
-
Sand the Bowl
Now, it’s time to give the salad bowl a frosted appearance. Use your fine-grade sandpaper to gently sand the entire surface of the bowl. Gradually build up layers of opacity by sanding in a circular motion. Aim for three to four sanding sessions to achieve the desired frosted effect.
-
Create Support Rings
The next step involves creating support rings to hold the shade securely onto the fixture. This is where the flexible plastic cutting boards come in handy. Flexible plastic cutting boards are amazing, I use them for EVERYTHING. Like this, and this and these guys.
Cut out two circles from the cutting board, each with a hole in the center. The hole should be large enough to fit around the bulb holder of your existing light fixture. These rings will act as spacers, ensuring the salad bowl shade sits securely.
If your salad bowl is heavier than mine, consider using more than two support circles for added stability.
-
Assemble the Light Fixture
Now it’s time to assemble everything. Place the first plastic ring onto the bulb holder of your existing light fixture. Then, carefully position the salad bowl over the ring, guiding the bulb holder through the hole you cut earlier. Finally, place the second plastic ring on top of the salad bowl, securing it in place.
The Finished Product
And there you have it! A stylish and unique light fixture created using materials from the dollar store. This project is not only budget-friendly but also a great way to express your creativity and add a personal touch to your home decor. The light has been up for over a month and I haven’t noticed the plastic doing anything weird (like melting or warping). So yay!
Remember to exercise caution and prioritize safety when working with electrical components. If you’re unsure about any step, consult a qualified electrician.
