DIY Bird Feeder Repair: Upcycling Plastic for a Seed-Saving Solution

Step-by-Step Guide to Bird Feeder Repair

Follow these simple steps to breathe new life into your bird feeder and stop the seed stampede!

Step 1: Cleaning and Preparation

Start by taking your bird feeder down and emptying any remaining seeds. Thoroughly clean the feeder with hot water and mild soap. Pay special attention to the feeding ports and any areas where mold or mildew may have accumulated. The National Audubon Society recommends cleaning feeders once or twice a year to maintain the health of your feathered friends. A clean feeder is a healthy feeder!

If you have a hand steamer, use it to blast away stubborn seed hulls and debris. Be careful to point the steamer away from yourself and any surfaces you don’t want splattered with dirty water.

Step 2: Prepare Your Plastic Container

Empty and thoroughly wash your chosen plastic container. Make sure it’s completely clean and dry before proceeding.

Step 3: Measure and Cut the Plastic

Carefully measure the inside of your feeding port, including the curved area where the plastic insert used to be. A typical measurement might be around 1 1/2″ x 2″, but this can vary depending on your feeder model. Using your sharp utility scissors or knife, cut out a rectangle of plastic from the side of the container, slightly larger than your measurements. It’s better to start with a slightly larger piece and trim it down as needed.

Step 4: Test and Trim for a Perfect Fit

Slide the plastic rectangle into the feeding port. It should fit snugly and sit relatively flush with the opening. If the piece is too large, carefully trim it down until it fits perfectly. This may require a few adjustments, so be patient and take your time. The goal is to create an insert that effectively blocks the seeds from spilling out while still allowing birds to access them easily.

Step 5: Create Remaining Inserts

Once you’ve achieved a perfect fit with your first insert, use it as a template to cut out the remaining inserts for the other feeding ports. Alternatively, you can “freestyle” it and cut each insert individually. The choice is yours!

Cut a rectangle out of the plastic container to fit the port.

Insert to the middle of the inside of the port and trim to fit.

Affix edge with small amount of appropriate adhesive.  When dry, re-fill with seed and re-hang.

Step 6: Secure the Inserts (Optional)

While the inserts might stay in place on their own, it’s best to secure them with a small amount of non-toxic adhesive. This will prevent them from falling out due to weather, curious squirrels, or overly enthusiastic birds. Apply a small dab of adhesive to the outside edge of the insert where it meets the feeder. Allow the adhesive to dry completely before refilling the feeder.

If you don’t have squirrels in your area, you might be able to skip this step. However, even without squirrels, the inserts can sometimes be dislodged accidentally, leading to another seed stampede. A little adhesive provides extra peace of mind.

Step 7: Refill and Enjoy!

Once the adhesive is dry (if used), refill your bird feeder with fresh birdseed and re-hang it in its usual spot. Watch as your feathered friends flock to the feeder and enjoy their meal without wasting precious seeds.

(I left the edge of this out intentionally so the piece could be seen. When correctly trimmed, it’s virtually invisible.)
