Is Your Alarm Clock Keeping You Awake? A Simple Solution for a Better Night’s Sleep
Are you a light-sensitive sleeper struggling to find a truly dark environment for restful sleep? I understand the struggle. I’ve always had trouble falling asleep and staying asleep. It’s a trait I inherited, and over the years, I’ve experimented with countless solutions: meditation, different mattress firmness levels, various pillow types, earplugs, blackout curtains – you name it, I’ve probably tried it.
Through this journey, I’ve learned a few crucial things about my sleep needs. Firstly, I need a small amount of mental distraction to ease into sleep. Secondly, once I’m asleep, I require an absolutely dark and silent room to maintain that state.
For years, I clung to my old alarm clock. It wasn’t anything fancy – just a basic electronic LED clock with a simple, non-intrusive display. It ticked all the boxes: it told the time, didn’t have a distracting face (unlike those ticking analog clocks that drive me crazy!), and generally stayed out of the way.
Then, disaster struck. My trusty old clock finally gave up the ghost. I needed a replacement, so I headed to the store, searching for a similar, simple model. The first one I bought was a nightmare. It glowed like a miniature supernova! Seriously, I could practically read by the light emanating from this thing. I returned it immediately and tried another. Same problem. It seems most modern alarm clocks use LCDs, and these LCDs are, for some reason, excessively bright. I found them incredibly irritating.
After four more frustrating returns, I finally found an alarm clock with adjustable brightness! Eureka! It even had the added bonus of a phone charging port and the ability to play music. Perfect, right? Well, not quite. Even on the dimmest setting, it was still too bright in a completely dark room. But, being the problem-solver I am, I devised a simple, inexpensive solution that has made a world of difference, and it only costs about a quarter.

The $0.25 Solution: How to Dim Your Alarm Clock Display
This DIY project is incredibly easy and requires minimal effort. It’s perfect for anyone who’s sensitive to light and wants to create a darker, more sleep-conducive environment.
Materials and Tools You’ll Need
- An alarm clock with an overly bright display
- Measuring tape or ruler
- Semi-transparent, colored plastic binder dividers (you can find a pack of 5 for around $1.19 at most office supply stores)
- Scissors and/or craft knife

Step-by-Step Instructions
-
Measure the Display: Start by carefully measuring the display of your alarm clock. Don’t estimate! Be precise. Get out your measuring tape or ruler and take accurate measurements of the height and width. Note down any fractions of an inch (like “19/64s”). Accuracy is key to a good fit.

Precise measurements ensure a perfect fit for your light diffuser. -
Cut the Diffuser: Take your colored plastic binder divider and cut a strip that matches the height of your alarm clock display. Then, cut the strip to the correct length, matching the width of the display. If your display has rounded corners, like mine, try to mimic that shape with your scissors or craft knife for a more seamless look.

Cut a strip of plastic to match the dimensions of your alarm clock display. -
Apply the Diffuser: You might get lucky, and the plastic diffuser will stick to your alarm clock display using static cling. If not, here’s a simple trick: lightly spritz a tiny bit of water on the back of the plastic strip. Let it almost dry completely (you want it to be slightly damp, not soaking wet). Then, carefully apply the strip to your alarm clock display. Press gently to secure it.
Mine has stayed in place for weeks now and shows no signs of falling off.
The Results: Before and After
It’s always tricky to photograph a small light source in a dark room, but I’ve done my best to illustrate the difference this simple modification makes. The following photos were taken with the same camera settings (F1.8, 1/60, ISO 1000) to provide an accurate comparison. And, just to reiterate, both photos were taken with the alarm clock set to its dimmest brightness setting. (You can see that the lighted buttons above the display remain the same brightness in both pictures).

The Difference a Quarter Can Make
It might not seem like a dramatic difference in the photos, but believe me, in a completely dark room, the impact is significant. It’s truly like night and day (pun intended!). The plastic diffuser also subtly changes the color of the display, which I find to be an added benefit. However, the biggest improvement comes from reducing reflections. Without the diffuser, the light from the alarm clock bounces off my dresser and the surrounding walls, illuminating the entire corner of the room.
With the binder divider attached, the reflection is significantly reduced, and the overall brightness is noticeably subdued. Importantly, you can still clearly see the numbers on the display, both at nighttime and during the day.
So there you have it! A simple, inexpensive, and effective way to dim your alarm clock display and create a more sleep-friendly environment. Who knew that a quarter could make such a big difference in your sleep quality?
If you’re struggling with an overly bright alarm clock and are looking for a quick and easy solution, give this DIY project a try. You might be surprised at how much better you sleep!
