DIY Modern Triangle Christmas Tree: A Step-by-Step Guide
Are you searching for a unique and stylish alternative to the traditional Christmas tree? Look no further! This DIY modern triangle Christmas tree is the perfect project for adding a touch of minimalist elegance to your holiday decor. Inspired by Scandinavian design, this tree is easy to make, customizable, and ideal for small spaces. I’ve always been drawn to simple, clean shapes, and triangles have a special place in my heart. This alternative Christmas tree design was sparked by a charming tree I spotted in a shop window during a trip to Sweden a few years ago. It has been living in my head rent free ever since, and I wanted to recreate it!

I’m absolutely loving how this graphic tree looks in my bedroom. While most of the rooms in our house have a festive touch of Christmas decorations scattered around, our bedroom was previously lacking any holiday spirit. This project was the perfect solution to bring some Christmas cheer to the space without overwhelming the room. It’s amazing how a simple, handmade item can completely transform the atmosphere of a room!

What You’ll Need to Build Your Triangle Tree
Before we dive into the step-by-step instructions, let’s gather the materials you’ll need to create your own modern triangle Christmas tree. The great thing about this project is that it requires only a few basic supplies, many of which you may already have on hand.
- A small piece of 1/4″ plywood (approximately 30″x20″): Plywood provides a sturdy and lightweight base for your tree. You can often find scraps at local lumber yards or home improvement stores.
- A jigsaw, table saw, or hand saw: Choose the saw that you’re most comfortable and confident using. A table saw will provide the cleanest and straightest cuts, but a jigsaw or hand saw will also work perfectly well.
- Painter’s tape: Essential for creating crisp, clean lines when painting the triangles.
- Pencil, ruler, and straight edge: These tools are crucial for accurately drawing out your tree design and ensuring precise measurements.
- Small paint brush: A small brush will give you greater control when painting the individual triangles, preventing paint from bleeding under the tape.
- Black craft paint (or any color of your choice): Select a paint color that complements your existing decor or create a bold statement with a vibrant hue. Acrylic craft paint is a great option for its durability and ease of use.
- Sandpaper: Use sandpaper to smooth out any rough edges and create a professional-looking finish.

Step-by-Step Instructions: Creating Your Triangle Christmas Tree
Now that you have all the necessary materials, let’s get started on building your modern triangle Christmas tree! Follow these step-by-step instructions carefully, and you’ll have a beautiful and unique Christmas decoration in no time.
Step 1: Draw the Outline of Your Tree
Begin by drawing out the basic shape of your tree on the plywood. It’s best to start from the bottom and work your way up to ensure accurate proportions. The triangles on my tree are each 4 inches wide at their bases and 5 inches tall. This makes the overall tree 25 inches tall (excluding the trunk) and 20 inches wide.
Start by drawing the trunk, which is 5 inches wide and 6 inches tall. Then, draw a center line for the tree extending 25 inches upwards. Mark the base of the tree at 20 inches wide. This will allow you to connect the sides of the tree to the top point, creating the overall triangular shape.

Step 2: Cut Out the Tree Shape
Using your chosen saw (table saw, jigsaw, or hand saw), carefully cut along the outline you’ve drawn. I used a table saw to cut the sides of the tree. If you’re using a jigsaw or hand saw, take your time and follow the lines as accurately as possible. Accuracy is key to a clean and professional looking tree.

Finally, cut out the trunk of the tree, ensuring that the lines are straight and the edges are smooth.

Step 3: Draw the Triangle Pattern
Now it’s time to create the triangle pattern within the tree shape. Draw horizontal lines across the tree, spacing them 5 inches apart. Then, mark off 4-inch distances along those lines. Connect these points to create the 25 smaller triangles that will make up the large triangle of the tree. This geometric pattern is what gives the tree its modern and eye-catching look.
Step 4: Sand the Edges
Before painting, give the edges of the tree a light sanding. This will smooth out any rough spots and create a more polished finish. Sanding also helps the paint adhere better to the wood.
Step 5: Paint the Triangles
Now comes the fun part: painting! I chose to alternate black and natural (unpainted wood) triangles, but you can use any combination of colors you like. Get creative and personalize your tree to match your style.
Use blue painter’s tape to create sharp, clean lines. To prevent the paint from seeping under the tape, use a small paintbrush and paint away from the tape, towards the center of the triangle on all sides. Allow for a little drying time between painting each triangle, especially if you’re alternating colors. It’s best to paint every other black triangle in a row to start.

Once the paint is dry to the touch, carefully remove the tape as soon as possible to avoid any paint running underneath. If you wait too long, the paint may become too dry and removing the tape could peel off some of the paint. Remove the tape as quickly as possible, to avoid any of the painting running under.

Once the first set of triangles is dry, you can tape over the painted parts to protect them while you paint the remaining triangles in that row. It’s a bit of a slow process, but with a little patience and drying time, you’ll achieve those beautiful, crisp lines.
