DIY Collapsible Light Box: Achieve Professional Product Photography at Home
Are you looking to elevate your product photography without breaking the bank? A light box, also known as a light tent, is an essential tool for creating professional-looking images. It provides diffused, even lighting, eliminating harsh shadows and reflections, and allowing your products to shine. While commercially available light boxes can be quite expensive, you can easily build your own DIY collapsible light box using simple and affordable materials. This project is perfect for small business owners, online sellers, hobbyists, and anyone who wants to improve their product photography skills.

This weekend, I embarked on the journey of crafting my own light box. Inspired by a fantastic tutorial I discovered on Digital Photography School (DPS), which cleverly utilized a box as its foundation, I was immediately drawn to the simplicity and affordability of the concept. This method offers a brilliant, cost-effective avenue for constructing your own light box. However, its primary drawback lies in its lack of collapsibility, posing storage challenges when not in use.
Determined to overcome this limitation, I armed myself with paper and pencil, eager to devise a solution that would adapt the tutorial while incorporating the crucial element of collapsibility. The result is a design that is both functional and space-saving, allowing you to create stunning product photos without sacrificing precious storage space.
Materials You’ll Need: Building Your DIY Light Box
Before we dive into the step-by-step instructions, let’s gather the necessary materials. The beauty of this project is that it relies on readily available and inexpensive items, making it accessible to everyone.
- Cardboard: Five pieces of sturdy cardboard will form the structure of your light box. Aim for pieces that are relatively flat and free from significant bends or creases.
- Utility Knife or Box Cutter: A sharp utility knife or box cutter is essential for precise cutting of the cardboard. Remember to exercise caution and use a cutting mat to protect your work surface.
- Tissue Paper or Tracing Paper: Tissue paper or tracing paper will act as a diffuser, softening the light and reducing harsh shadows. Choose a white or light-colored paper for optimal light transmission.
- Tape or Glue Stick: Tape (masking tape, packaging tape, or duct tape) or a glue stick will be used to secure the tissue paper to the cardboard frames and to assemble the light box structure.
- Mailing/Packaging/Duct Tape: Strong tape, such as mailing, packaging, or duct tape, is crucial for creating durable hinges that will allow the light box to collapse and fold easily.
- Straight Edge or Ruler: A straight edge or ruler will ensure accurate measurements and straight cuts, resulting in a professional-looking finished product.
- Matte Poster Board or White Cardstock: A piece of matte poster board or white cardstock will serve as the backdrop for your product photos, providing a clean and seamless background.
Step-by-Step Instructions: Crafting Your Collapsible Light Box
Now that you have all the necessary materials, let’s begin the construction process. Follow these step-by-step instructions to build your own DIY collapsible light box:
Step 1: Cutting the Cardboard Pieces
Begin by cutting five pieces of cardboard into 18″ squares. These squares will form the front, back, top, bottom, and side of your light box. Next, carefully cut out 14″ squares from the center of three of these 18″ squares. These three squares will serve as the light-diffusing windows of your light box.

Step 2: Attaching the Tissue Paper
Take the three cardboard squares with the 14″ square cutouts and carefully tape or glue tissue paper over the openings. Ensure that the tissue paper is taut and smooth to provide even light diffusion. Trim any excess tissue paper around the edges of the cardboard squares.

Step 3: Assembling the Light Box Structure
Now it’s time to assemble the five cardboard squares into the light box structure. Arrange the squares as shown in the image below, with the three tissue paper-covered squares positioned as the top, side, and front of the box. Use packing tape to create hinges between the squares, allowing them to fold and collapse.
Start by attaching the lower left square to the square directly above it, creating a hinge with packing tape. Then, fold the lower left square up and onto the adjacent square, securing the hinge with tape. Repeat this process for the center square, folding it over onto the left square and creating two tape hinges.

Continue by folding the far right square over onto the middle square and creating hinges. Finally, fold down the top right square and create hinges to complete the basic structure of the light box.

Step 4: Reinforcing the Hinges
To ensure the longevity and durability of your light box, reinforce each hinge by applying additional tape over them on the sticky side, facing you. This will provide extra support and prevent the hinges from tearing or breaking over time.

Step 5: Adding a Poster Board Stop (Optional)
To prevent the poster board backdrop from sliding down, you can add small strips of cardboard to act as stops. In my case, I found that only one stop on the bottom left square was necessary. Experiment to see what works best for your light box.

Folding and Storing Your Collapsible Light Box
The beauty of this design lies in its collapsibility. When not in use, your light box can be easily folded into a compact cube for convenient storage. Follow these steps to fold your light box:
- Start with the light box in its open, assembled position.
- Fold the top square down onto the front square.
- Fold the side squares inward, towards the center.
- The light box should now be folded into a flat, compact shape.

This compact form factor makes it easy to store your light box in a closet, under a bed, or behind a piece of furniture, saving valuable space in your home or studio.

Using Your DIY Light Box: Capturing Stunning Product Photos
Now that your collapsible light box is complete, it’s time to put it to use and capture some stunning product photos. Here are a few tips to help you get the best results:
- Set up your light box: Place the light box on a stable surface and insert the matte poster board or white cardstock as a backdrop.
- Position your product: Place your product inside the light box, ensuring that it is well-lit and centered in the frame.
- Lighting: Use two external lights, such as desk lamps or studio lights, to illuminate the light box from both sides. Position the lights at an angle to avoid harsh reflections.
- Camera settings: Use a tripod to stabilize your camera and prevent blurry images. Experiment with different camera settings, such as aperture, shutter speed, and ISO, to achieve the desired exposure and depth of field.
- White balance: Adjust your camera’s white balance to ensure accurate color representation.
- Post-processing: Use photo editing software to fine-tune your images, adjusting brightness, contrast, and sharpness as needed.
With a little practice and experimentation, you’ll be amazed at the professional-looking results you can achieve with your DIY collapsible light box.

Notice how the cardboard stop prevents the poster board from sliding down, ensuring a clean and seamless backdrop for your product photos?

Examples: Product Photos Taken with the DIY Light Box
Here are a few examples of product photos I took using my new collapsible light box. The difference in lighting and clarity is remarkable compared to photos taken without a light box.

The soft, diffused lighting eliminates harsh shadows and highlights, creating a more professional and appealing image. This is especially important for showcasing intricate details and textures in your products.
