My parents have truly turned their backyard into an extension of their home, a place where they spend countless hours enjoying the beauty of nature. It’s a meticulously crafted landscape, boasting vibrant flower gardens, flourishing vegetable beds, and a delightful assortment of fruit trees. Stepping into their backyard is like entering another world, a hidden oasis you wouldn’t expect to find nestled within their quiet suburban neighborhood. Adding a water feature was the final piece of the puzzle in their landscaping vision. Last summer, my dad constructed a stunning three-season gazebo, affectionately nicknamed the “tea house,” inspired by traditional Japanese tea houses. They’ve been diligently working on detailed garden plans for years, and those plans always included a designated space for a pond. However, the initial quotes they received for professional pond installation were exorbitant, with some exceeding $15,000! Determined to make their pond dreams a reality without breaking the bank, Bruno and I offered to help them DIY the project, utilizing high-quality pond building components from smartpond.

The truth is, building a backyard pond is a surprisingly DIY-friendly project that doesn’t require a fortune. While you can certainly opt for elaborate designs and high-end features, the core of the project remains surprisingly simple. The Soothing Sound of Water: The gentle sound of rippling water is incredibly calming and therapeutic. It can help to reduce stress, promote relaxation, and create a peaceful atmosphere in your backyard. This was a primary motivation for my parents, who strategically placed the pond near their gazebo to maximize the auditory enjoyment.
Enhanced Aesthetic Appeal: A pond adds undeniable visual interest to any yard. It breaks up the monotony of traditional landscaping, adds dimension and texture, and creates a focal point that draws the eye. The natural stones and rocks that line the pond contribute a sense of strength and permanence, providing a beautiful contrast to the delicate greenery surrounding it.
Low Maintenance: Contrary to popular belief, ponds are relatively easy to care for. Aside from periodically cleaning the pump (a simple and straightforward task), there’s not much required in terms of upkeep. You’ll never have to mow or weed a pond! Ponds can also be an excellent solution for addressing problem areas in your yard. If you have a patch of land where grass refuses to grow or an awkward section you’d like to conceal, a pond provides an elegant and practical solution.
Attracting Wildlife: A pond naturally attracts a diverse array of wildlife. While you can choose to add fish to your pond, even without them, the water will become a haven for birds, frogs, dragonflies, and other fascinating small creatures, creating a vibrant and dynamic ecosystem in your backyard.

Step 1: Marking the Pond Location

Carefully define the desired location and shape of your water feature. We opted for stakes and spray paint to outline the perimeter, but you can utilize any method that suits your preference, such as a garden hose, string, or even simply drawing in the dirt. Consider the surrounding landscape and how the pond will integrate with your existing garden design. Think about the size and shape that will best complement your yard and provide the desired aesthetic.

Step 2: Digging the Pond

Time to get your hands dirty! The depth of the hole will depend on your personal preferences and the features you plan to incorporate. If you intend to add a fountain or waterfall, ensure you create a sufficient water reservoir for the pump to operate efficiently. A common mistake is making the pond too small or too shallow. Generally, it’s better to err on the side of greater depth. We may have gone slightly overboard, digging our pond 2.5 feet deep, but we knew we wanted to construct a substantial fountain and wanted to guarantee the pump had ample water to circulate.

Step 3: Leveling and Preparing the Base

Ensure the pond hole is level, both at the bottom and around the edges. Utilize some of the excavated dirt to build up the edges slightly, creating a raised lip that prevents runoff from entering the pond. Compact the soil thoroughly using a tamper or by simply walking around the perimeter. Next, add a two-inch layer of leveling sand (typically playground sand) to the bottom of the pond. This will provide a smooth, even base and offer added protection for the pond liner, preventing punctures from rocks or roots.

Step 4: Installing the Pond Liner

Installing the pond liner is a relatively straightforward process. Simply cut the liner to size, ensuring you leave plenty of extra material around the edges to secure it. Carefully lay the liner into the hole, smoothing out any wrinkles or creases. You can use rocks or stones to temporarily hold the liner in place around the edges.

Step 5: Creating a Fountain Platform (Optional)

This step is specific to our project and can be skipped if you’re building a simple pond without a fountain. We added a platform constructed from cinder blocks and rigid plastic garden edging. The reason for this platform was to create a base for a stacked stone fountain that would protrude from the center of the water feature. The fountain required a substantial water reservoir to draw from, but we wanted the pond itself to remain relatively shallow and filled with river rocks. To avoid filling the entire 2.5-foot-deep hole with rocks, we created a “faux-bottom” for the river rocks to sit on. Beneath the platform, there’s a large volume of water available to power the fountain.

Step 6: Adding Stones and Building the Fountain

In most cases, this step involves adding aesthetically pleasing rocks and stones to the pond and its edges to conceal the liner and seamlessly integrate the water feature with its surrounding environment. Choose stones that complement your existing landscape and create a natural, harmonious look. River rocks, flagstones, and boulders are all excellent choices. Arrange the stones in a way that creates visual interest and provides hiding places for any fish or other aquatic creatures you may add.

In our particular project, we first needed to build the fountain! We dry-stacked New York Bluestone stones into a cylindrical shape, with a copper pipe running up the center to deliver water to the top. To complete the fountain, we commissioned a local stone cutter to fabricate a 39-inch diameter capstone out of another slab of bluestone. The water flows up through the copper pipe, cascades over the capstone, and then trickles down the sides, creating a beautiful and mesmerizing effect.

Keep in mind that this was an additional step my parents wanted to take and were willing to invest in. If you prefer a simpler fountain design, you could simply continue arranging stones to top off the cylinder or, even better, utilize one of smartpond’sfountain nozzles to disperse the water evenly over the edges. These nozzles are easy to install and offer a variety of spray patterns, allowing you to customize the look of your fountain.

Step 7: Adding Lights, Filling the Pond, and Turning on the Pump!

Now for the exciting part! Install any underwater lighting you desire to enhance the ambiance of your pond, especially at night. Position the lights strategically to highlight key features of the pond, such as the fountain, rocks, or plants. Carefully fill the pond with water, ensuring the liner remains securely in place. Once the pond is full, connect the pump and turn it on! Observe the water flow and make any necessary adjustments to ensure the pump is functioning correctly and the fountain is performing as desired.
