This project is beginner-friendly, but working with acrylic requires some patience and the right tools. Let’s dive into the process of creating your very own acrylic phone stand!

Let’s be honest, cutting acrylic can be a bit of a learning curve, especially if you’re working in a small space with limited power tools. I experimented with a few different methods before finding the best approach. Initially, I tried using a scoring knife, but it didn’t provide the clean cuts I was hoping for. I then switched to a jigsaw, but it proved to be too cumbersome for the smaller pieces. Finally, I dusted off my Dremel rotary tool, which I hadn’t used before. After watching several YouTube tutorials and doing some research, I found that the Dremel was the most effective tool for the job, although it still required some effort.

Keep in mind that cutting acrylic may involve some trial and error. Having the right power tools specifically designed for cutting plastics can significantly simplify the process. Don’t be afraid to experiment and find the method that works best for you and your available tools.

Materials You’ll Need

Materials for acrylic phone stand
  • Sheet of colored acrylic or plexiglass (choose your favorite color!)
  • Cutting tool: Scoring knife, saw, or Dremel rotary tool with cutting accessory
  • Strong adhesive: E6000 glue or equivalent
  • Marker or pen
  • Ruler or measuring tape

Note: As mentioned earlier, I tried different methods for cutting the acrylic. Consider the tools you have available and your comfort level when selecting your cutting method.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Preparing the Acrylic Sheet

Before you start cutting, leave the protective covering on the acrylic or plexiglass. This will help prevent scratches and other damage during the cutting process. If your acrylic sheet doesn’t have a paper cover, apply a layer of tape to protect the surface. This will allow you to mark the acrylic without directly damaging it.

Place your phone on top of the prepared acrylic sheet to get an idea of the approximate size you’ll need for the base of the stand. Use a ruler or measuring tape to outline the shape around your phone, leaving a little extra space for comfortable placement.

Step 2: Cutting the Base Piece

Now it’s time to cut the base piece of the phone stand. Choose the cutting method that you’re most comfortable and experienced with. As I mentioned before, I found that the Dremel rotary tool worked best for me, but it required a bit of patience to saw through the acrylic. If you’re using a scoring knife, make sure to score the acrylic several times along the marked lines before attempting to break it. If you’re using a saw, use a slow and steady motion to avoid chipping or cracking the acrylic.

Carefully cut along the lines you marked in the previous step. Take your time and focus on creating clean, straight cuts. The more precise your cuts, the better the finished phone stand will look.

Step 3: Cutting the Support Pieces

Once you’ve cut out the large base piece, it’s time to cut the support pieces that will hold your phone upright. You’ll need two additional pieces: a prop piece and a resting sliver.

Cut a piece of acrylic that’s the same width as the short side of the base piece and approximately 2 inches long. This will serve as the prop that supports the phone stand. Then, cut a smaller sliver of acrylic, approximately 0.5 x 1.5 inches. This sliver will act as a resting place for your phone at the bottom of the stand.

Step 4: Assembling the Phone Stand

Now it’s time to assemble the phone stand using your chosen adhesive. Apply a small amount of E6000 glue (or equivalent) to the bottom of the small acrylic sliver. Attach the sliver to the bottom of the large base piece, approximately 1/2 inch from the bottom edge. Press the sliver firmly in place and allow the glue to cure until it’s sturdy.

Next, apply glue to one side of the 2-inch prop piece. Attach the prop piece to the back of the base piece, several inches from the bottom. The placement of the prop piece will determine the angle at which the phone stand sits, so experiment to find the perfect position for your phone.

Once you’ve attached both support pieces, set the phone stand on its side and allow the glue to fully cure. This will ensure a strong and durable bond.

Once the glue has completely cured, your DIY acrylic phone stand is ready to use! Place it upright on a table, desk, or next to your bedside, and enjoy the convenience of having your phone propped up and easily accessible.
