Materials You’ll Need for Your DIY Wall Art

  • Large pieces of paper in fall colors: (Mine are 19.5 x 26.5 inches). Choose colors that resonate with you and complement your existing décor. Think warm browns, burnt oranges, muted greens, and soft creams.
  • Contact paper: Select at least two colors or patterns. Contact paper adds visual interest and texture to your artwork. Consider metallic finishes, subtle patterns, or contrasting colors for a dynamic effect.
  • Scissors: A good pair of scissors is essential for precisely cutting out your shapes.
  • Pen or pencil: For sketching your shapes onto the contact paper.
  • Glue stick (optional): If you decide to use regular paper or wrapping paper instead of contact paper, a glue stick will be necessary to adhere the shapes to the background.
  • Frames: Choose frames that fit the dimensions of your artwork. The frame can significantly enhance the overall aesthetic, so consider the style and color that best complements your art and décor.

Step-by-Step Guide: Creating Your DIY Wall Art Masterpiece

Follow these simple steps to create your own unique and stylish wall art in just a few minutes.

  1. Decide on Your Shapes

Begin by brainstorming the shapes you want to incorporate into your artwork. I opted for a combination of fall-inspired shapes like leaves and acorns, along with geometric designs. Consider your personal style and the overall aesthetic you’re aiming for.

Flip your contact paper over so the wrong side is facing up. This will allow you to easily draw your shapes onto the backing.

If you’re looking for inspiration, try searching online for “geometric patterns,” “fall leaf silhouettes,” or “abstract art ideas.”

  2. Draw and Cut Out Your Shapes

Using your pen or pencil, draw the desired shapes onto the backing of the contact paper. For perfect circles, use a large bowl or other circular object to trace the outline. For more organic shapes, like leaves or acorns, feel free to freehand your drawing.

Once you’re satisfied with your drawings, carefully cut along the outlines of each shape with your scissors.

Accuracy is key here, so take your time and focus on cutting clean lines.

  3. Attach the Shapes to Your Paper

Remove the paper backing from each shape, revealing the adhesive side. Carefully position the shapes on your large piece of paper, experimenting with different arrangements until you find one you like.

If you’re using contact paper exclusively, the adhesive backing will be sufficient to hold the shapes in place. However, if you’re using regular paper or wrapping paper, you’ll need to apply a thin layer of glue to the back of each shape before attaching it to the background.

Press firmly on each shape to ensure it adheres properly to the paper.

  4. Frame and Hang Your Artwork

Once the glue is dry (if you used it), your artwork is ready to be framed! Carefully insert your artwork into the frame, ensuring it’s centered and securely in place.

Now, find the perfect spot on your wall to showcase your creation. Hang your framed artwork and step back to admire your handiwork!

Consider using different frame colors and styles to create a gallery wall effect.

Tips for Success:

  • Choose high-quality materials: Investing in good quality paper, contact paper, and frames will ensure that your artwork looks its best and lasts for years to come.
  • Plan your design: Before you start cutting, take some time to sketch out your design on paper. This will help you visualize the finished product and avoid any mistakes.
  • Experiment with different textures: Consider adding different textures to your artwork by using textured paper, fabric scraps, or even natural elements like leaves or twigs.
  • Don’t be afraid to get creative: This is your chance to express your personal style, so don’t be afraid to experiment with different colors, shapes, and patterns.

Variations and Ideas:

  • Geometric Abstraction: Focus solely on geometric shapes, creating a modern and minimalist design.
  • Nature-Inspired Motifs: Incorporate natural elements like leaves, flowers, or branches for a touch of organic beauty.
  • Monochromatic Magic: Stick to a single color palette for a sophisticated and cohesive look.
  • Personalized Patterns: Create your own unique patterns using stamps, stencils, or freehand drawing.
  • Photo Collage Art: Incorporate small printed photos into your design for a personal and sentimental touch.
