Materials You’ll Need:

  • 1/2 yard black 100% cotton duck cloth or canvas: This durable fabric is perfect for withstanding wear and tear from your pet.
  • White craft paint (Martha Stewart’s recommended): High-quality craft paint ensures a vibrant and lasting design.
  • Fabric medium: This is crucial for making the paint adhere properly to the fabric and prevent cracking.
  • Plastic cup and fork: These are your tools for creating the splatter paint effect.
  • Drop cloth or newspaper: Protect your work surface from paint splatters.
  • Sewing machine: A sewing machine will make the process faster and more efficient, but you can also sew by hand.
  • Inexpensive bed pillow: This will be the filling for your pet bed. Choose a size that suits your pet.
  • Large needle and heavy thread or floss: For securing the pillow form and adding extra support.

Step-by-Step Guide to Creating Your DIY Pet Bed

Now that you have all the materials, let’s get started on creating this cozy and stylish pet bed!

A clean and comfortable white pet bed, ready to be customized with fabric.

Step 1: Prepare the Pillow Form

Start with an inexpensive bed pillow. A basic polyester pillow from a discount store works perfectly. The goal here is to create a more compact and supportive base for your pet bed.

A hand using a large needle and thread to stitch the pillow, creating a more defined shape.

Using a large needle and heavy thread or floss, stitch all the way around the outside of the pillow, about 3 inches from the edge. This creates a channel that will help compress the pillow and give it a more defined shape. You can use a contrasting thread color for clarity during this step, as it won’t be visible in the final product.

Next, stitch two large “X”s across the middle of the pillow. This further flattens and compacts the pillow, providing a firm and supportive base for your pet. This step is essential for preventing the pillow from bunching up and ensuring your pet has a comfortable and even surface to rest on.

Step 2: Cut and Prepare the Fabric

The fabric pieces cut to size, ready for the splatter paint design.

Cut the fabric into three pieces according to the following dimensions:

  • Top piece: 17 inches x 23 inches
  • Bottom pieces (2): 17 inches x 17 inches

The two bottom pieces will create an envelope closure, allowing you to easily remove the cover for washing. This is a practical feature that will help keep your pet bed clean and fresh.

Step 3: Create the Splatter Paint Design

Take the top piece of fabric (17″ x 23″) outside and place it on a drop cloth or newspaper to protect your work surface. In a plastic cup, mix together approximately 2 tablespoons of white craft paint with 1 tablespoon of fabric medium. The fabric medium is crucial for ensuring the paint adheres properly to the fabric and doesn’t crack or peel after washing.

Using a plastic fork, dip it into the paint mixture and then flick or splatter the paint randomly across the fabric. Experiment with different techniques to achieve the desired effect. You can create small, delicate splatters or larger, more dramatic splashes. Have fun and let your creativity flow!

Allow the paint to dry completely. This may take several hours, depending on the humidity and temperature. Once the paint is dry to the touch, proceed to the next step.

Step 4: Set the Paint

Place the painted fabric in a dryer on high heat for at least 15 minutes. This crucial step permanently sets the paint and makes it washable. Without this step, the paint may fade or wash off over time.

Step 5: Assemble the Pet Bed Cover

The fabric pieces pinned together, ready for sewing the envelope closure.

You will be creating a simple envelope closure for the back of the pillow cover. To do this, turn over the open ends of the two bottom pieces (17″ x 17″) twice and stitch them down. This creates a clean and finished edge for the envelope closure.

Placing the right sides together, pin the painted pillow top to the two bottom pieces, overlapping the hemmed edges to form the envelope closure.

Using a drinking glass as a template to trace a curved corner on the fabric.

Using a drinking glass as a template, trace a curved corner with a piece of chalk on all four corners of the pinned fabric. This will create a rounded corner when the pillow is turned right side out, giving it a more professional and finished look.

Trimming the fabric corners with sharp scissors to create a curved edge.

Trim away the excess fabric at the corners with a pair of good, sharp fabric scissors, following the chalk lines. Be careful not to cut too close to the seam allowance.

Step 6: Sew the Pillow Cover

Sewing the fabric pieces together to create the pet bed cover.

Leaving a 1/4-inch seam allowance, sew all the way around the outside edge of the pillow cover, securing the top and bottom pieces together. Be sure to backstitch at the beginning and end of each seam to prevent unraveling.

Then, turn the pillow cover right side out and iron the seams flat. This will give your pet bed cover a clean and professional finish.

Step 7: Final Touches

Insert the pillow form that you stitched into the pillow cover through the envelope closure. If you want to entice your kitty (or dog!), add a little catnip just inside the pillow cover before fully inserting the pillow. This will make the new bed even more appealing to your furry friend.
