Budget-Friendly Kitchen Makeover: Transforming a Dated Space

We’re embarking on another exciting kitchen makeover project! While our own Curbly House kitchen renovation is still underway, we decided to tackle another kitchen transformation to bring some much-needed updates and charm. Sometimes, diving into new projects is the best way to manage the chaos of life!
Recently, Bruno’s father purchased a house just a few blocks away from us. The kitchen in this new home is desperately in need of a refresh. When Wilsonart reached out to us about showcasing their innovative Wilsonart® HD® High Definition® laminate countertops, we knew it was the perfect opportunity to give this kitchen some love and attention. Join us as we reveal our plans and the creative solutions we’re implementing!
Take a quick video tour of the existing space to get a feel for the challenge ahead:
Bruno’s dad currently resides in a condo a short drive away. However, he desired a home within walking distance of his grandchildren. When this particular house became available, it was evident that it required a buyer willing to invest time and effort into its renovation. While the house is small with a comfortable layout, every room is calling for updates. Fortunately, he secured the property at a great price, allowing him to gradually address the necessary improvements.

Like many homes in our neighborhood, this house was once occupied and cherished by an elderly woman who spent a significant portion of her life within its walls. Very few updates were made over the years. Aside from window replacements, the house remained largely untouched since the 1950s, presenting Bruno’s dad with a substantial renovation project.
The kitchen has proven to be particularly challenging due to its limited size and layout. It’s essentially a galley kitchen, but lacking adequate workspace on both sides. A single north-facing window provides minimal natural light, and floor-to-ceiling cabinetry dominates the space, with many cabinets requiring a step stool to reach. The cabinets are all painted a dull white, and many are difficult to open without considerable effort.
And then there are the countertops—a gold-flecked laminate paired with a faux-brick backsplash. While gold accents are trendy right now, these countertops and backsplash are far from stylish. In fact, they’re quite the opposite.

When considering the type of makeover for this kitchen, we focused on Bruno’s dad’s specific needs. A compact kitchen is actually ideal for him. He doesn’t cook extensively, but he has a handful of favorite dishes he enjoys preparing. He doesn’t require a vast amount of space, but organization and a clean, appealing aesthetic will greatly enhance his culinary experience.
While granite and composite countertops are popular choices today, we wanted to explore options that would deliver a dramatic transformation while staying within a reasonable budget. What attracted us most to Wilsonart® HD® High Definition® Laminates is their textured surfaces and depth, combined with a variety of edge styles that mimic the look of granite without the high price tag. These laminates offer a perfect blend of style, durability, and affordability, making them ideal for this project.

Remember the MTV show *Made*? The show featured awkward teenagers with ambitious goals, provided them with a coach, and helped them achieve remarkable transformations. That’s how Bruno and I feel about this kitchen. It’s like a troubled teen with immense potential, and we’re the coaches ready to help it realize its full potential. And we plan to accomplish this within a week, without exceeding our budget. In true *Made* fashion, we’re even having a special guest join us: Chris, Curbly’s editor-in-chief and the creative mind behind ManMade!
Here’s a closer look at what we’re working with:

That vintage clock is an original feature of the kitchen. It still functions perfectly, and we’re using it as the central inspiration for the kitchen’s new design.

Yes, that’s a toilet located inside the kitchen pantry. We’re not entirely sure why it’s there, and we’re still contemplating what to do about it. It’s certainly a unique design choice!

This range hood appears quite worn, but we appreciate its retro aesthetic. We’re considering revitalizing it with a fresh coat of paint to add a pop of color and personality to the kitchen.

And these old drawers? Let’s just say they aren’t exactly a source of excitement. They’re definitely in need of some updating or replacement.
This is the overall aesthetic that’s guiding our kitchen makeover:

We’re leaning towards installing a classic black and white checkerboard floor to add a touch of timeless elegance. And I particularly love that narrow bookcase tucked into the corner. It’s a clever way to add storage and display space in a small kitchen.

Open shelving is going to become the kitchen’s new best friend! It provides easy access to frequently used items and helps create a more open and airy feel in the compact space. The key to successful open shelving is to keep it organized and visually appealing.
