Simple Window Treatment DIY for Renters

In our own home, we utilize lined bamboo shades to provide privacy and block out unwanted light. However, a particular corner of the room felt a bit bare and needed a little something extra to complete the look. I didn’t require curtains that could be opened and closed daily, so I devised this wonderfully easy and clever trick to add a decorative touch to the window without sacrificing functionality. It’s all about creating an aesthetic enhancement without compromising the existing window covering’s purpose. This DIY method is perfect for adding a layer of style and sophistication to any room, easily and inexpensively.

Here’s a list of everything you’ll need to get started:

Materials You’ll Need:

  • Lightweight Curtain Panels: Choose a pair of curtain panels that are lightweight and easy to work with. I purchased mine from Target a while back, but Vivan curtains from Ikea are another excellent option due to their ideal weight and texture. Consider the color and pattern to ensure they complement your existing décor. Opt for curtains with rod pockets or back tabs, as these will make the installation process even simpler. These features allow for easy hanging and adjustment.
  • Wooden Dowel Rod (1/4 – 1/2 inch) or Lightweight Café Rod: Select a wooden dowel rod or a light café rod that is between 1/4 and 1/2 inch in diameter. Alternatively, you can use an extendable tension rod for added flexibility. The key is to ensure that the rod is lightweight, preventing it from putting too much strain on the Command Strip hooks. I found a suitable dowel rod at Lowes for just $1, making this a truly budget-friendly project. Ensure the length is appropriate for your window width.
  • Straight Pins (Optional): Straight pins can be used to further secure the curtain panel to the dowel rod, providing extra stability and preventing slippage. While optional, they are highly recommended for achieving a neat and polished look. Choose pins that are discreet and blend in with the fabric of your curtains. Using pins with small heads will minimize their visibility.
  • Command Strip Hooks (5 lbs. Capacity or Higher): Invest in Command Strip hooks that are capable of holding at least 5 pounds each. These hooks are essential for hanging the dowel rod without damaging your walls. Make sure to follow the instructions on the packaging carefully to ensure proper adhesion. Clean the wall surface thoroughly before applying the Command Strips for optimal results. Choosing the right weight capacity is crucial for the stability of your window treatment.

Step 1: Measure and Cut the Dowel Rod

Begin by accurately measuring the width of your window opening. Use a tape measure to determine the distance between the two sides of the window frame where you intend to hang the curtains. Once you have the measurement, carefully cut your dowel rod to the appropriate size using a saw or a similar cutting tool. Ensure that the cut is clean and straight for a professional finish. A slightly longer dowel rod is better than one that’s too short, as you can always trim it down further.

Step 2: Install the Command Strip Hooks

Carefully install the Command Strip hooks on the wall above your window. To ensure that the hooks are positioned at the same height, use a tape measure and a level. This will guarantee that your curtain hangs evenly and looks aesthetically pleasing. Follow the instructions provided on the Command Strip packaging for proper installation. Press the strips firmly against the wall and allow them to set for the recommended time before attaching the hooks. Proper placement of the hooks is crucial for the overall appearance of your DIY window treatment.

Step 3: Place the Dowel Rod on the Hooks

Gently lay the dowel rod into the Command Strip hooks. It’s important to remember that this window treatment is primarily for decorative purposes. You will not be able to open and close the curtains as you would with traditional curtains. This method is designed to add color, texture, and visual interest to your window without requiring the functionality of opening and closing. Ensure the dowel rod is securely resting on the hooks before proceeding. This step sets the stage for adding the curtain panels.

Step 4: Secure the Curtain Panel

Use straight pins to securely attach the curtain panel to the dowel rod. In my case, I utilized a curtain with back tabs, which simplified the process. When I positioned the rod with the curtain on the Command Strip hooks, only the last tab was not secure. To resolve this, I folded the top edge of the curtain around the end of the dowel rod. You can see in the close-up image where the fabric is wrapped around the dowel rod’s end. I then used a pin to secure the natural fold of the curtain to the folded edge. For a more discreet look, I typically use straight pins without the rounded end and pin from the backside of the curtain. However, for the purpose of clarity in this post, I used a white-ended pin and pinned from the front side. This ensures you can clearly see how the curtain is attached to the dowel rod. The goal is to create a secure and aesthetically pleasing connection between the curtain and the rod.

It’s also an incredibly easy way to make your home look more cozy and inviting when staging it for an open house or a real estate showing. The added texture and color can significantly enhance the overall appeal of your space, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere for potential buyers.
