DIY Small Homework Station: Create an Organized Learning Space for Your Child

• 22-inch Table Legs: These are the perfect height for a child-sized desk. You can find affordable options at most hardware stores.
• Table Leg Connectors: These connectors make attaching the legs to the tabletop quick and easy.

Additional Organization and Storage

To complete the homework station, I gathered items I already had around the house and purchased a few key pieces to enhance organization and functionality:

• Rolling Cart: A rolling cart provides flexible storage for school supplies, art materials, and other essentials. Look for a cart with multiple tiers to maximize space.
• XL Bulletin Board: A bulletin board is a great way to display important notes, assignments, artwork, and other inspirational items. You can find inexpensive bulletin boards at thrift stores or purchase a new one.
• Storage Containers: Use various containers, such as pencil cups, bins, and baskets, to organize and store school supplies.
• Fabric Scraps: For covering the bulletin board (optional, but adds a personal touch!).
• Spray Adhesive: To adhere fabric to the bulletin board.
• Thumbtacks or Staple Gun: To secure the fabric on the bulletin board.
• Duct Tape: To create clean edges on the back of the bulletin board (optional).

Step-by-Step Guide to Creating Your DIY Homework Station

Now that you have all your materials, let’s get started! Here’s a step-by-step guide to creating your own DIY homework station:

Step 1: Assemble the Desk

Begin by attaching the table legs to the pre-treated board using the table leg connectors. Follow the instructions provided with the connectors for proper installation. Once the legs are securely attached, you can paint or stain the desk to match your child’s room decor or personal preferences. Allow the paint or stain to dry completely before moving on to the next step.

Step 2: Recover the Bulletin Board (Optional)

If you’re using an older bulletin board or simply want to add a personal touch, you can recover it with fabric. This is a great way to coordinate the bulletin board with the rest of the homework station decor. To recover the bulletin board, you’ll need fabric, spray adhesive, thumbtacks or a staple gun, and duct tape (optional).

Start by ironing the fabric to remove any wrinkles. Then, apply a generous layer of spray adhesive to the front of the bulletin board. Carefully position the fabric over the bulletin board, smoothing out any wrinkles or bubbles as you go. Wrap the excess fabric around the back of the bulletin board and secure it with thumbtacks or a staple gun. For a clean finish, use duct tape to cover the edges of the fabric on the back of the bulletin board.

Step 3: Set Up the Homework Station

Now it’s time to put everything together! Choose a location for the homework station that is relatively quiet and free from distractions. Hang the bulletin board above the desk, ensuring it’s at a comfortable height for your child to reach. Place the desk in front of the bulletin board and position the rolling cart nearby for easy access to supplies.

Step 4: Organize Supplies

Gather all the school supplies your child will need for homework and studying. Use storage containers to organize items such as pencils, pens, markers, crayons, scissors, glue, and paper. Place frequently used items within easy reach on the desk or in the rolling cart. Store less frequently used items in bins or baskets on shelves or in a closet.

Step 5: Make it Fun and Engaging!

To make the homework station a place your child enjoys spending time, add some fun and engaging elements. Consider adding:

• String Lights: Battery-operated string lights can add a warm and inviting glow to the space.

I added a colorful rug and an ottoman to create a more inviting and comfortable space. My son likes to sit on his knees when he works, and I wanted to provide him with a space where he could do that without feeling restricted.
