The Best Low Light Houseplants That Are Easy to Care For

Let’s dive into the world of low-maintenance indoor plants that can brighten up any space, regardless of the amount of natural light available.

1. Euphorbia

Often mistaken for cacti, Euphorbia plants are a distinct species with their own unique care requirements. Euphorbias thrive in full or partial sunlight. The key to watering them is to thoroughly soak the soil initially, then allow it to dry out completely before watering again. I typically check my Euphorbia once a week to assess its moisture level. In my climate, I usually only need to water it about once a month, but this frequency may vary depending on your local conditions. Overall, Euphorbias are relatively fuss-free plants, making them a great choice for beginners.

2. Rubber Tree Plant

The Rubber Tree Plant is a personal favorite of mine. Its large, hearty leaves and overall elegant shape add a touch of sophistication to any room. To keep your Rubber Tree Plant happy, place it in a room with ample light. When it comes to watering, ensure the soil remains consistently moist, but not waterlogged. I typically water mine every week or two, depending on the season and the plant’s moisture needs.

3. ZZ Plant

The ZZ Plant boasts a cool name and an equally cool appearance. These plants are incredibly low-maintenance and can tolerate both low and bright-lit environments. When watering, a small amount of water – about 1-2 tablespoons – is sufficient until the soil is completely dry again. Alternatively, you can place 1-2 ice cubes on the soil and allow them to melt slowly, providing the perfect amount of moisture for this plant. The ZZ Plant is exceptionally drought-tolerant, making it ideal for those who tend to forget about watering.

4. Lipstick Plant

The Lipstick Plant earns its playful name from the vibrant red flowers it produces, resembling miniature tubes of lipstick. Position your Lipstick Plant in a bright space, but avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch its leaves. Water the soil thoroughly, ensuring it’s not overly saturated. When the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch, it’s time to water again, keeping the soil consistently moist.

The versatile Golden Pothos, known for its trailing vines.

5. Golden Pothos Plant

Golden Pothos plants are remarkably adaptable and can thrive in almost any space that receives some natural light, whether it’s a dimly lit corner or a sunny windowsill. The key is to keep the soil slightly damp, adjusting your watering schedule accordingly. When properly cared for, Golden Pothos plants exhibit vigorous growth, making them perfect for trailing down shelves or cascading from hanging baskets, adding a dramatic touch to your interior decor.

6. Blue Star Fern

I’m captivated by the Blue Star Fern’s distinctive color and the intricate shape of its leaves. It’s a true beauty to behold! This fern prefers low light conditions and indirect sunlight. Blue Star Ferns tend to be more thirsty than some other houseplants, so it’s important to water them regularly, ensuring the soil remains consistently moist. Check the soil frequently and water whenever it starts to feel dry.

7. Satin Pothos Plant

Similar to the Golden Pothos, the Satin Pothos is an excellent choice for beginner plant enthusiasts. It can thrive in any space with natural light, although it’s best to avoid direct sunlight. As long as the soil remains consistently moist, these plants are generally happy and healthy. And just like their Golden Pothos cousins, Satin Pothos plants love to climb and grow rapidly, adding a touch of jungle vibes to your home.

8. Monstera

If you’re looking for a larger plant that makes a bold statement, the Monstera is an excellent option. These stunning plants flourish in well-lit spaces and thrive when their soil is consistently moist. Check on your Monstera at least once a week to assess the soil’s moisture level. Otherwise, these plants are relatively low-maintenance, making them a great addition to any indoor garden.

9. Snake Plant

Snake Plants are incredibly easy to care for – perhaps the easiest of all! They thrive in bright light but can also tolerate low light conditions. Water them only when the soil begins to feel dry about 3/4 of the way down. Snake Plants are remarkably forgiving, so if you occasionally forget to water them, it’s usually not a problem. Just try not to neglect them entirely!

The Fiddle Leaf Fig, a slightly more challenging but rewarding plant.

10. Fiddle Leaf Fig

I intentionally saved the Fiddle Leaf Fig for last because its ease of care is a topic of debate. I’ve had mine for years and have managed to keep it alive and thriving. However, many people consider them notoriously difficult to care for. The key is to keep your Fiddle Leaf Fig in a bright space (they dislike being moved once they’ve established a comfortable location) and ensure the soil remains consistently moist. Once you start moving it around from room to room, it can become stressed, leading to browning and leaf drop. So, find a suitable spot and let it be! Keep a watchful eye on it, and you should be fine. These plants need a bit more attention than the others listed above, but with some proper care, they can be a stunning addition to your home.

Extra Tip: A general tip for watering most plants is to insert your finger about an inch into the soil. If the soil clings to your finger and feels slightly damp, it’s likely doing well. If your finger comes out completely dry, it’s a clear sign that your plant needs watering!

Plants are an excellent way to introduce natural texture and color into your home without overwhelming the space (which might explain why I have so many!). I wish you all the best in your plant-filled endeavors!
