Spooky & Simple Halloween BOO String Art: A DIY Tutorial

As an avid decorator of shelves and mantels, I find immense joy in
accessorizing, especially during the holiday season. This year, I wanted to
incorporate string art into my Halloween decor, but with a simpler and more
minimalist approach. Using leather cord, I’ve created a touch of fun
macabre for my mantle that’s both stylish and easy to make!

This tutorial will guide you through creating your own spooky and simple
“BOO” string art for Halloween. It’s a perfect project for adding a

• 3 pieces of wood MDF: Choose MDF (Medium-Density Fiberboard) pieces
  measuring 6″ x 9″. MDF provides a smooth and sturdy surface for your
  string art.
• White spray paint: A can of white spray paint will give your MDF
  pieces a clean and crisp base color. Opt for a paint that’s suitable for
  wood and provides good coverage.
• Flat head nails: Flat head nails are essential for creating the
  outline of your letters. They should be small enough to be hammered easily
  but sturdy enough to hold the leather cord securely.
• Leather cord: The star of the show! Choose a leather cord in your
  preferred color. Black leather cord is perfect for a spooky Halloween
  vibe, but you can experiment with other colors as well.
• Hammer: A standard hammer will do the trick for hammering the nails
  into the MDF.
• Paper letter templates: Download and print letter templates for “B”
  and “O.” These templates will serve as guides for hammering your nails in

• Double-stick tape (optional): Double-stick tape can be helpful for
  keeping the letter templates in place while you’re hammering the nails.
• Scissors: For snipping the ends of the leather cord.
• Screws (optional): For creating a stand for the letters.
• Velcro strips (optional): For attaching the letters to a mantle.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Now that you have all your materials, let’s get started with the tutorial.
Follow these step-by-step instructions to create your own spooky and simple
Halloween BOO string art:

Step 1: Prepare the MDF Pieces

Begin by spray painting the MDF pieces white. This will provide a clean and
crisp base for your string art. Apply an even coat of spray paint, ensuring
that all surfaces are covered. Allow the paint to dry completely. While the
MDF pieces will be dry to the touch after about an hour, waiting a full 24
hours is recommended to ensure they are completely dry and ready for the
next step.

Step 2: Attach the Letter Templates

Download and print the letter templates for “B” and “O.” Center each letter
on a separate piece of MDF. If you’re having trouble keeping the templates
in place, use double-stick tape to secure them to the MDF. This will ensure
that the templates don’t shift while you’re hammering the nails.

Step 3: Hammer the Nails

Outline the inside and outside of each letter by hammering the flathead nails
about 1/2 inch down through the MDF. Be sure to space the nails as evenly as
you can. The closer the nails are, the more defined your letter will be. Aim
for a consistent spacing to achieve a neat and professional look. Take your
time and be careful not to hammer the nails in too far, as you’ll need to
wrap the leather cord around the heads of the nails.

Step 4: Remove the Paper Templates

Once you’ve finished forming a letter with each nail, gently tear the paper
away. Be careful not to bend or damage the nails as you remove the paper. If
necessary, use tweezers to remove any small pieces of paper that may be
stuck under the nails.

Step 5: Wrap the Leather Cord

This is where the magic happens! Wrap the leather cord around each nail head.
Instead of the traditional back & forth wrap that you see with nail string
art, I opted for a simple outline by wrapping the inside of each letter, and
then the outside of each leather. Keep things separate and minimal! This
creates a cleaner and more modern look. Experiment with different wrapping
techniques to find the style that you like best.

Step 6: Secure the Cord

Tie off the end by wrapping the leather cord around the last nail twice and
tying in a knot. This will secure the cord and prevent it from unraveling.
Make sure the knot is tight and discreet.

Step 7: Trim the Ends

Snip the ends of the leather cord with scissors. Cut the ends as close to the
knot as possible to create a clean finish.

Step 8: Display Your Creation

To keep the MDF letters standing upright, I screwed a few screws halfway into
the back to support them. You could also use velcro strips to attach these
to your mantle or walls. Choose the method that works best for your display
space.

And voila! Place them on your mantle or shelves with a few other plants and
macabre items. Arrange your “BOO” string art alongside other Halloween
decorations such as pumpkins, candles, and spooky figurines. Create a
cohesive and eye-catching display that will impress your guests.

I love how these turned out! Aside from Halloween decor, you could also use
this technique to form your last name, or some other holiday-inspired
