From Spark to Shelf: My Adventure Writing “Mason Jar Nation”

Yes, that’s my name – JoAnn Moser – on the cover of the book you see above. I actually wrote a book! A genuine, available-on-Amazon-and-at-local-stores book. The whole thing started in December 2014 when Mark Johanson from Cool Springs Press reached out to me. He had an idea for a project that would combine an engaging history of Mason jars with 50 innovative ways to use them today. I had previously done some technical editing for Cool Springs, so Mark thought of me for this opportunity. He asked if I would be willing to write the book, develop the 50 projects, and, oh yes, handle all the photography.

My first reaction was a surprised, “Seriously?” Closely followed by, “Haven’t we already seen every possible Mason jar project?” But then I decided that if I declined the challenge, I would regret it forever. And so began the monumental task of writing and completing a publication-worthy book in just ten months.

Diving Deep into the World of Mason Jars

I embarked on my Mason jar journey by devouring every fruit jar history and collecting book I could find. (Yes, such books exist!) I sought out fruit jar and bottle collectors, meeting some truly fascinating people along the way. I scoured antique stores near and far. I brainstormed new and unique ideas and recipes using Mason jars, exploring projects that combined Mason jars with materials I hadn’t seen used before. I created backdrops for photos, researched lighting techniques, and even treated myself to some new photography equipment.

Then, I compiled everything I had learned and created, meticulously focusing on every detail.

The Writing and Editing Process

I finally finished the manuscript – photos, text, and all – in October and sent it to Mark. Then, I waited. I received the copy edits, resubmitted the manuscript, and waited some more. At that point, I was uncertain about the book’s progress, knowing only that a dedicated team at Cool Springs was working on it. Finally, I received news from Mark that the first galleys were in, and he was “uber-pleased” with the outcome. Since I had never heard Mark use that term before, I was equally “uber-pleased.”

A few weeks later, Alyssa, my book’s manager (yes, it had a manager!) at Cool Springs, sent me a digital copy of the 144-page book. It looked great, but I wondered how it would appear in physical form – with a cover, pages, and everything. Another few weeks passed before I would find out. Then, one day, my partner called out from down the hall, “Something special came for you in the mail!” I thought, “I don’t remember ordering anything from Amazon recently.” Duh!

Cool Springs’ return address gave it away. The book had arrived! And… wow… it was a book… a real, honest-to-goodness book! And the best part was, it looked spectacular. The team at Cool Springs had done an amazing job. From the fonts to the layout, color palette, and embossed cover, everything was perfect. (And this is coming from someone who obsessed over the smallest details while writing and photographing the thing. I was a complete control freak!) My partner deserves a medal for putting up with me throughout the entire process.

Inside “Mason Jar Nation”: A Glimpse at the Content

Regarding the book’s structure, it is divided into two main parts. The first section includes the “engaging historical” overview, information on fruit jar collecting (collectors refer to them as FRUIT JARS, a term you quickly learn when speaking with them), and a brief technical information section. The second, more substantial part of the book features the 50 projects, categorized into five sections: “Crafts,” “In the Garden,” “In the Kitchen,” “Inspired Storage,” and “Lighting and Lanterns.” (The Table Top Mason Jar Water Fountain pictured above is featured in the “In the Garden” section.)

What will the world think of “Mason Jar Nation?” I’m about to find out, as its release date is just around the corner: May 2nd, 2016. I’m not afraid to admit that I’m more than a little anxious about its release to the public, but that’s the ultimate goal of such endeavors.
