Materials You’ll Need

  • 10 old t-shirts (the more colorful, the better!)
  • Serger or sewing machine
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Pins
  • Pencil or fabric marker

Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these detailed instructions to create your own amazing picnic blanket backpack:

Step 1: Cutting the Fabric Squares

Begin by selecting one of your t-shirts. Using a ruler and pencil, measure and mark a 12-inch by 15-inch rectangle on the front of the shirt. Pin the front and back layers of the shirt together to prevent slipping. Carefully cut out the rectangle, ensuring you have two equal-sized pieces of fabric.

Step 2: Repeating the Process

Repeat step 1 with seven more t-shirts. This will give you a total of 16 fabric squares. Feel free to mix and match colors and patterns to create a visually appealing blanket.

Step 3: Sewing the Squares Together

Take two fabric squares and place them wrong sides together. Pin one side securely. Using a serger or sewing machine with a small zigzag stitch, sew along the pinned side to create a seam. If you are using a sewing machine, trim the excess fabric from the seam to reduce bulk.

Step 4: Creating Rows

Continue connecting the fabric squares until you have four rows, each consisting of four squares. Press the seams open for a flatter finish.

Step 5: Assembling the Blanket

Now, sew all four rows together to form the main blanket. Once the rows are joined, sew a seam around the entire perimeter of the blanket for a clean and finished edge. This will also help prevent fraying.

Step 6: Creating the Backpack Straps

From the remaining t-shirt scraps, cut out two strips that measure 20 inches by 4 inches. Serge or sew around the edges of both straps to prevent fraying and provide a more professional finish. These will be the straps for your backpack.

Step 7: Making the Flap

Cut out another rectangle from the t-shirt scraps, this time measuring 12 inches by 10 inches. Finish the edges of this rectangle using a serger or sewing machine. This rectangle will serve as the flap for the backpack, securing the rolled-up blanket.

Step 8: Folding the Blanket

Lay the completed blanket right side up on a flat surface. Fold in two opposite sides towards the center. Then, fold the blanket in half lengthwise. Starting from the bottom edge, fold the blanket upwards, square by square, creating a compact roll.

Step 9: Positioning the Flap

With the blanket rolled up, position the 12-inch by 10-inch rectangle (the flap) on the back of the rolled blanket. Secure it with pins. Flip the blanket over and mark the positions where the ties will be attached. This will ensure the flap closes securely.

Step 10: Attaching the Straps

Unroll the blanket and position the straps on the appropriate panel, ensuring they are evenly spaced and securely pinned in place. The straps should be positioned to allow the blanket to be carried comfortably as a backpack.

Step 11: Sewing the Flap and Straps

Using a straight stitch on your sewing machine, carefully attach the flap and the two straps to the blanket. Reinforce the stitching at the points where the straps are attached to ensure durability.

Bonus: Make a Matching Pillow!

Don’t let those leftover t-shirt scraps go to waste! Here’s how to create a matching pillow to complete your picnic set.

Step 14: Creating the Pillow

Cut the remaining t-shirt scraps into smaller strips. Then, cut two more 12-inch by 15-inch squares from any remaining fabric. Serge or sew around three sides of the squares, wrong sides together. Stuff the pillow with the t-shirt scraps, creating a soft and comfortable filling. Finally, serge or sew around the fourth side to completely enclose the scraps.
