The $20 Bathroom Refresh: Budget-Friendly Bliss

Transform Your Rental Bathroom: A Budget-Friendly Makeover

Let’s face it – sometimes, bathrooms can be the bane of our existence. Especially when you’re stuck with a less-than-desirable space in a rental property. I completely understand the frustration. After enduring my own bathroom for what felt like an eternity, I decided it was time for a change. My initial impulse? To tear everything out, set it ablaze, and maybe even perform a ceremonial salt-spreading ritual for good measure. But, alas, reality intervened. As a renter, such drastic measures were, shall we say, frowned upon by the property management.

So, what’s a renter to do when faced with a bathroom that sparks no joy? The answer: a budget-friendly, temporary makeover that breathes new life into the space without causing any permanent damage or lease violations. This is where creativity and resourcefulness come into play.

Before and After: Witness the Transformation

Prepare to be amazed! Here are the before and after shots of my bathroom transformation. See for yourself how a few simple changes can make a world of difference.

Before: The original, less-than-inspiring bathroom
Before: The original bathroom with dated features.
After: A refreshed and inviting bathroom space
After: A much-improved bathroom space.

Take note of the dated medicine cabinet doors with their questionable blue paint, a relic from the 70s. And let’s not forget the floor grout – a seemingly endless expanse of grime that defied all cleaning attempts. These were the primary targets of my makeover mission.

The Secret Weapon: Affordable Materials

The key to a successful budget makeover is finding affordable materials that can make a big impact. Here’s what I used for this bathroom transformation:

  • Self-adhesive Vinyl Floor Tiles: These were the game-changer for the floor. At just $8 from the Dollarama, they were an absolute steal.
  • A New Shower Curtain: A fresh shower curtain can instantly brighten up the entire bathroom.
  • Placemats and Glue: Yes, you read that right! I used 8 placemats (2 for $1 from the Dollarama) and some glue to create new sliding doors for the medicine cabinet.

Step-by-Step Guide to a Temporary Bathroom Makeover

Ready to transform your own rental bathroom? Follow these simple steps:

1. Revitalize the Floor with Vinyl Tiles

The first step was tackling the dreaded floor. I started by thoroughly cleaning the existing tiles. A combination of bleach and vinegar worked wonders in removing stubborn grime and ensuring a clean surface for the new tiles to adhere to. I cleaned the tiles with bleach then vinegar, cause of the whole sticky Vs. Dirt thing. Cleaning is crucial for proper adhesion.

Following the instructions that I found here, the next step was to simply peel and stick the new vinyl tiles directly over the old ones. This is where patience comes in handy, as you’ll want to ensure proper alignment and avoid any air bubbles. Note: It’s probably easier if you don’t get a small dog to help you, they tend to get underfoot!

Choosing the right design for the vinyl tiles is crucial to your overall aesthetic. Consider the existing colors and patterns in your bathroom. Opt for a neutral or complementary design that blends seamlessly with the rest of the space. If your bathroom is small, lighter colors can help to create a more spacious feel.

2. Transform the Medicine Cabinet with Placemat Doors

The next project was the medicine cabinet. After a brief flirtation with contact paper, I decided to abandon the original doors altogether and start fresh. The solution? Bamboo placemats!

I made new doors from Bamboo placemats glued onto stiffer plastic placemats. The process was surprisingly simple and yielded fantastic results.

First, I used the old door as a template to cut the placemats to the appropriate size. Then, I applied a generous amount of glue to bond the bamboo and plastic placemats together. Clamping or weighing down the placemats during the drying process is crucial for ensuring a strong and even bond.

Once the glue had dried completely, I carefully inserted the new “doors” into the slots where the old doors had been. The beauty of this design is that the doors are lightweight enough to slide open and closed without the need for doorknobs.

3. Finishing Touches: Plants and Towels

Then I jammed the whole ‘door’ into the slot that the old door came out of. These are light enough that they don’t need doorknobs.

To complete the transformation, I added a few finishing touches. A strategically placed plant brought a touch of nature into the space, while neatly folded towels added a sense of order and sophistication. These small details can elevate the entire look and feel of your bathroom.

The Result: A Bathroom I Can Finally Tolerate

The result? While not perfect, my bathroom is now a space that I can finally tolerate. I no longer feel the urge to “sack it like Carthage,” a testament to the power of a simple makeover.

And the best part? Just like my kitchen, this bathroom can easily be returned to its former state should the need arise. This is the beauty of temporary upgrades – they allow you to personalize your space without making any permanent changes that could jeopardize your rental agreement.

Conclusion: Embrace the Power of Temporary Makeovers

Don’t let a less-than-ideal rental bathroom get you down. With a little creativity, resourcefulness, and a few budget-friendly materials, you can transform your space into a stylish and inviting oasis. Embrace the power of temporary makeovers and create a bathroom that you’ll actually enjoy spending time in. So, go ahead and unleash your inner designer – your dream bathroom awaits!
