1. Preparing the Wood

We began with a 10-foot length of 2″ x 4″. Since that was a bit unwieldy, we cut it down to a more manageable 4 feet. The length you choose will depend on where you plan to display the card holder. We opted for 4 feet because it fit well on our console table (4.5 feet long) and fireplace mantle (6 feet long).

Note: A 4″ x 4″ could also be used for a chunkier look, but we didn’t have a piece long enough in our scrap wood collection. Feel free to experiment!

2. Trimming the Board (Optional)

Find the center of one of the long, skinny sides of your board. Mark this center point with a pencil. This mark will guide you as you create the channel.

6. Sanding
