DIY Antiqued Mirror: Create a Vintage Masterpiece for Less

Blank walls can be a decorating challenge, but they also present an opportunity for creativity! We were faced with just such a situation in our home and were inspired by a beautiful, yet expensive, antiqued mirror from Restoration Hardware. The price tag, however, was a major deterrent. At nearly $900, it simply wasn’t feasible. Determined to achieve the same stunning look without breaking the bank, we embarked on a DIY adventure. The result? A gorgeous antiqued mirror that cost us only around $50 and a single weekend to create. Read on to learn how you can transform your own space with this budget-friendly project!

Gathering Your Supplies: What You’ll Need for Your DIY Antiqued Mirror

Before you begin, gather all the necessary materials. This will streamline the process and ensure you have everything on hand. Here’s a comprehensive list of what we used:

• Mirror Tiles: 2 packs of 12″ mirror tiles (6-count per pack)
• Mirror Adhesive: Special adhesive designed for securing mirrors to walls or backing.
• Safety Gear: Chemical-resistant gloves and safety goggles are crucial for protecting yourself from the chemicals involved.
• Paint Stripping Gel: For removing the backing paint from the mirror tiles.
• Plastic Putty Knife: For scraping off the softened paint stripper.
• Muriatic Acid: Used to create the antiqued effect (handle with extreme care!).
• Spray Bottle and Funnel: For applying the muriatic acid safely and precisely.
• Cotton Rags: For blotting and cleaning.
• Gold Spray Paint: To add a layer of aged-looking color to the back of the mirrors.
• Small Mosaic Mirrors: A pack of round 1-inch mosaic mirrors for decorative accents.
• Backing Board: A piece of thin particle board or plywood to mount the mirrors onto. Consider the size of your wall when choosing the backing board.

Step-by-Step Guide to Creating Your Antiqued Mirror

Now that you have all your supplies, let’s get started on the transformation!

Step 1: Applying the Paint Stripper

First, put on your rubber gloves and prepare to apply the paint stripper. Using a paintbrush, apply a thick, even coat of the paint stripping gel to the back side of the mirror tiles. Make sure to cover the entire surface where the backing paint is.

Step 2: Removing the Paint

Patience is key! Let the paint stripper work its magic for several hours. The longer you wait, the easier it will be to remove the paint. After the waiting period, grab your plastic putty knife and begin gently scraping away the softened paint.

**Important Lessons Learned:**

1. **Waiting Time:** If you think you’ve waited long enough for the stripper to do its work, wait a little longer! We initially gave it 3 hours, but letting it sit for even longer would have made the paint removal process much smoother.
2. **Handle with Care:** Mirrors can be fragile. Avoid applying excessive force when scraping, as this can lead to breakage (and potentially bad luck!).

Don’t worry if you can’t remove every last bit of paint. The goal is to remove enough so that the muriatic acid can effectively create the antiqued effect.

Step 3: Applying the Muriatic Acid

Safety first! This step requires extra caution. Put on your rubber gloves and safety goggles before proceeding. Using the funnel, carefully pour some of the muriatic acid into the spray bottle. Lightly mist the edges of the back of the mirror with the acid. The acid will react with the remaining silvering, creating the aged effect.

Step 4: Blotting the Acid

Let the acid sit for about a minute or two, allowing it to etch the surface. Then, using a clean cotton cloth, gently blot up the acid. This will stop the etching process. The amount of time you leave the acid on will affect the intensity of the antiqued look, so experiment to achieve your desired effect.

Step 5: Applying Gold Spray Paint

Once all the mirrors have been sprayed and blotted, it’s time to add the gold paint. Spray a thin, even coat of gold spray paint onto the back of each mirror tile. The gold paint will peek through the etched areas, enhancing the vintage aesthetic.

Step 6: Laying Out the Mirrors

Allow the gold paint to dry completely. Then, lay out your mirror tiles on top of the backing board in your desired arrangement. Consider the spacing between the tiles to create a visually appealing pattern. This is a good time to visualize the final product and make any adjustments before adhering the mirrors.

Step 7: Adhering the Mirrors

Apply a generous amount of mirror adhesive to the back of each mirror tile. Carefully press each tile onto the backing board, ensuring it’s firmly in place. Follow the adhesive manufacturer’s instructions for drying time. Proper adhesion is crucial for a long-lasting and secure mirror.

Finally, use the same mirror adhesive to attach the small, round mosaic mirrors to each corner of the larger mirror tiles, or wherever else you’d like to add a decorative touch. This adds an extra layer of detail and enhances the overall vintage aesthetic. Get creative with your placement!
